Course Catalog Description. Skill development in keyboarding techniques. Emphasis on the development of acceptable speed and accuracy. Prerequisite: None

Six best timed writings on alphabetic keyboard 60%
Three best timed writings on numeric keyboard 40%
Instructor’s Attendance Policy –There is no face to face attendance for this class; however, you will be required to do one Alpha and one Numeric timing face to face. The face to face meeting is scheduled for May 1, 2013

Course

Credits Students who successfully complete this course will receive two hours of

college credit.

Prerequisites None

Course Goals 1. Identify parts of the keyboard/microcomputer

2. Practice techniques of rapid keystroking and key shifting

3. Practice good posture.

4. Demonstrate alpha pad mastery by means of the touch system.

5. Demonstrate numeric pad mastery by means of the touch system

Internet Access to a computer and Internet service provider. A browser such as

Internet Explorer 8.0 or higher, Mozilla Firefox 17.0, Google Chrome,

or Sarfari for Apple Computers. Dial up services are not recommended.

Pertinent College Withdrawal

Policies The last day to withdraw (W-Day) from a course is April 19. It is your responsibility to withdraw from a course if you feel you cannot pass the

course or do the assignments. You must complete the forms in the Registrar’s

Office.

Under section 51.907 of the Texas Education Code, “an institution of

higher education may not permit a student to drop more than six

courses, including any course a transfer student has dropped at

another institution of higher education.”

Academic Dishonesty

The WCJC catalog states: “Plagiarism and cheating refer to the use of

unauthorized books, notes, or otherwise securing help in a test; copying

tests, assignments, reports, or term papers...Misconduct may result in the

student’s being placed on disciplinary probation or suspension (dismissal)”.

Distance Learning

You are not required to attend class on campus. You will be required to attend

an orientation on Wednesday, January 30 at 6 p.m., FBTC Room 228. You will also be required to attend a Mandatory class to do at least one Alpha timing and Numeric timing face-to-face. This meeting will be on May 1

at 6 p.m., FBTC Rm 228.

If you do not attend the orientation on January 30 or the meeting on

May 1 to do your timed writings face-to-face, you will receive and F in the class.

Evaluation A. Five 3- minute timed writings for gross words per minute (GWAM) on the

alphabetic keyboard, 6-error limit. Students cannot use the backspace key

on the timed writings.

A = 35+ C = 29 - 31

B = 32 - 34 D = 26 - 28

B. Three time writings on the numeric pad. You MUST have a percentage of

errors at 10% or less.

For the Numeric timings, click on Keypad, then Keypad Timed Writings. Click Group 8.

A = 150+ C= 130 – 139

B = 140 – 149 D = 120-129

C. Students must complete all three sections of the Main Menu: Lessons 1-25,

Skill Building (Accuracy or Speed emphasis), and Keypad. If you do not finish all three sections of the Main Menu, your grade will drop to the next level. For instance, if you have an “A” average and did not finish all three sections of the main menu, you will receive a “B”.

Due Dates There are no specific due dates in this class; however all requirements for

the class must be completed no later than 11p.m., May 13.

Exams There will be no exams.

Final Course Grade 60% -Five best timed writings on alphabetic keyboard

40% - Three best timed writings on numeric pad

As soon as a student completes the above requirements with a grade of an “A” on both keyboards, you will be finished with the class for the semester.
