- January 7, 2013 - We are still looking for bits and pieces(programs, quilting projects, photos, etc.) of our QS history for you to share at our 35th Anniversary Celebration being held at the 2013 January QS meeting. Please contact Elizbeth Harty if you have something you would be willing to share at the meeting. QS Member, Julie Tebay, will give a presentation on Amish Quilting.
- December 3, 2012 - Joint QS Meeting, 6:00 PM and will be held here at our current QS meeting site, BethanyUnitedMethodistChurch. The night is "Mystery Night" with some surprise guests and a little bit of mystery. QS Members whose last name begins with A to M can bring some cookies or bars - disposable plate or containers preferred. Look for further details at the November meeting, the December newsletter and our website.

Education
We have completed another successful year of QS sponsored quilting workshops. I hope those of you who attended enjoyed the workshops and have added some new tips and techniques to your quilting and pieces skills. The 2013 workshops are in process so stayed tuned for more information and details./ Tip from the President-Elect
Hi all,
Well, the time has come to say my goodbyes to my flowers and "tuck them in" for the winter. That's always a little sad after enjoying their blooms and color all summer. But then there's the joy of new plants in the Spring. And, after the snow flies, we'll all have a little more indoor time to spend in our sewing rooms creating and playing with our own colors and patterns! :o)
Here are some handy safety tips I found:
Safe Storage: Use a potholder to make a case for your scissors or rotary cutter. For a rotary cutter, fold the potholder in half and stitch the side and bottom edges together. For scissors, bring 2 corners together and stitch edges. The loops can be used to hang the cases in your sewing room.
Safety First! Always wear shoes when using a rotary cutter. A quilter shared her story about a her rotary cutter falling off the cutting table and hitting her bare foot. Unfortunately she required stitches so she now wears shoes when cutting. (I never thought about it, but it does make sense to take this little extra precaution. The "better safe than sorry" method.)

Quilters Sew-ciety Day Minutes
The meeting was called to order at 1:00 pm by Lucy Horn, the Day Facilitator. Lucy reviewed the privileges of QS membership, reminded members to wear name tags and silence cell phones. Lucy gave a brief history of the rotary cutter and matt which were introduced in 1979 by the Olfa company. A motion was made by Betsy Monroe, seconded by Sandy Stiles and passed by the membership to accept the minutes as published in the September Newsletter.
- Show and Tell: Members shared 2 bed, 1 lap, 8 wall, 2 baby, 3 charity quilts and 3 fabric=created journal covers.
- New Members: Susan Bjornson and Carol Boerger were introduced. 2 guests were also present.
- Lotto Block: Blocks were held over until the evening meeting drawing. The October block, Anvil Star, is available on the QS website and will be in the October newsletter.
- Door Prizes: Shelly Stokes donated a 1 yard bundle of her dyed fabric. 4th & Main of Cannon Falls donated a gift card.
- Motion to adjourn: At 3:10pm Betty Drier made the motion which was seconded by Mary Nordeng.

Quilter’s Sew-ciety Evening Meeting Minutes
The meeting was called to order at 7 p.m. by Jan Bruce, Evening Facilitator, at BethanyUnitedMethodistChurch. Jan welcomed guests, reviewed the benefits of membership and reminded us to wear our name tags, being sure to greet new members with yellow name tags (less than one year‘s membership). Thanks for the mice-in-heaven joke, Jan. A motion was made by Elizabeth Harty and seconded by Marge Byrne to accept the August minutes as published in the September newsletter.
- Show and Tell: Members shared 2 large quilts, 13 twin/crib quilts, 2 wall hangings, 3 table runners, a place mat, one pillow, 3 journal covers and one quilt which will be featured on the cover of Australian Patchwork and Quilting around March 2013. Bright colors, great ideas. Thank you all.
- 7:40-7:55 Break time to enjoy the speakers’ quilts in front of the chancel and the QS committee displays, including our amazing library, in the hallway just outside the chancel.
- Door Prize: Laurie Cook won a bundle of hand-dyed fabric with Paintstiks offered by our speaker and Mary Farrell won a gift certificate from “Fourth and Main. “
- Guests: Welcome to Andrea Mohr, Emily Moline, Nancy Hansen and Susan Harzler. Come back soon.
- Lotto Block: September’s contemporary block with the off-center-litte-black-square inspired a total of 36 submissions. Ooops, the day meeting forgot to draw for a winner, so day and evening names were combined. A set of 18 squares each was won by Betty Dreier and Connie Duvald. We look forward to seeing how you use them! Directions for the October block are in this newsletter and online.
- Motion to adjourn: At 9:10 p.m. Darlene Peterson made the motion to adjourn and Judy Rutz seconded. All approved.
- Betsy Monroe reminded members that the Baltimore Album Group (BAG) meets at 9am the 3rd Wednesday of each month at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Rochester. The group specializes in promoting hand appliqué and any interested people are invited to attend meetings.
- Pam Geerdes, Librarian, reminded members that the library is closed for inventory and will re-open for the October meeting.
- Sara King announced that the Kiwanis are making cloth dolls for the Mended Hearts group. The dolls are donated to children in the hospital and anyone interested in making dolls please contact Sara King.
- Lorraine Nagel suggested creating a picture directory to easier identify and remember members.
- Romayne Thompson thanked the total of 320 QS members who worked with her, Sharon Sandberg and Rosie Seegmiller to create a quilt for the Mayo Clinic Women’s Cancer Program. Response was so enthusiastic that the one projected became two completed. The quilts have been displayed in the Women’s Cancer area, have served as background for a PBS program on breast cancer and one of is freatured in the cancer awareness May 2013 calendar, along with several quilts by member Eunice Hill. Romayne has brought calendars to share with QS members, so see her at the break.
- Sue Zahasky, Education/Program Coordinator. Details on upcoming education opportunities are in Sue’s Education/Program section of this newsletter.
- Karen Greenslade revealed the identity of the September mystery quilter as Georgia Bonesteel, confirming the guesses of many in the audience.

This month we Get to Know Gail Sauter....I heard about Quilter's Sew-ciety when I took my very first quilting class with Sandy Evans. I've been a member for 10 years. I started noticing antique quilts when I traveled with a friend and we visited antique shops and flea markets. I also collect antique quilts. I do my own machine quilting and love to free motion the designs. I have hand quilted but I don't have the time it takes. I would love to have a long-arm quilting machine to do even more elaborate designs on my quits. I would have to have bright colors of fabric to match the tropical theme of the island (if she is deserted on one). I don't have chocolate, but a snack or two of something isn't too far away. I actually always have the TV on when quilting. Sometimes I watch and sew and sometimes it's just background noise. I have a daughter who lives and works in WashingtonDC. She is the Assistant Food and Beverage director at the Hyatt on Capitol Hill. She has had the good fortune to meet President Obama and Vice President Biden and Presidential candidate Romney this year. She figures she has the election covered now.

Festival of Trees

The 2013 Quilt Show Chairs are trying to get a facility and date pinned down. If anyone has any suggestions please let one of us know! We have had several suggestions for special exhibits & they have all been great! We just need some more people willing to take charge of a committee. There are lots of jobs available & if you have something you really want to do you better hurry, I'm sure they will be snapped up soon! If we want to have a

/ Lotto Block for September
CountryManor Charmfrom Strips & Strings by Evelyn Sloppy
8 ½ inch unfinished blockFabric- Red prints, black, off white. Black & white may be tone on tone, but must “read” as a solid.
From Red prints cut various width strips 2-3 inches wide & at least 9 ½ inches long.
From black & off white cut 1- 5 ¼ inch square. Cut both squares into quarters by making 2 diagonal cuts. You will have enough triangles for 2 blocks.
Using ¼ in seam piece red strips until they are at least 9 ½ inches wide. (Hint-you may want to place the narrower strips on the inside & wider strips on the outside edges.)
Trim block to 8 ½ inches square.
Sew 1 black triangle & 1 light triangle together along the short sides, making sure the black triangle is always on the right.
Turn the blocks so the seams are running vertically (sideways), & using the following template cut the lower left hand corner & upper right hand corner. (Hint-you may chose to tape the triangle on a long ruler to make cutting easier.)
Stitch a triangle unit on the trimmed corners of each string block. Press the seams toward the triangles.

Fat Quarters Exchange or Block of the Month
- A Block of the Month Secret Pals – where you buy enough fabric to make 12 blocks in the size that your Secret pal chooses and give one each month, one for her birthday and one for the reveling party.
- Fat Quarters Secret Pal receives between 10 to 20 Fat Quarters plus 2 quilt squares during the year. Please limit your fat quarters to one to two each month. Plus you may give her a fat quarter for her birthday and one or two for the reveling party. Fat quarters only please.
We will accept sign ups at the December meeting and up to December 14th, 2012 at which time we will contact you with your Secret Pal’s Name.
Please bring quilt block or 1 to 2 Fat quarters each month; if you are unable to attend please make sure you give gift to a friend to bring to the meeting or mail the fat quarter to your Secret Pal.
