Student Behavior in the Classroom

Student behavior that interferes with an instructor’s ability to conduct a class or other students' opportunity to learn is unacceptable and disruptive and will not be tolerated in any instructional forum at UNT. Students engaging in unacceptable behavior will be directed to leave the classroom and the instructor may refer the student to the Center for Student Rights and Responsibilities to consider whether the student's conduct violated the Code of Student Conduct. Course description: The course will address selected problem areas in Spanish. Particular emphasis will be placed on the use of prepositions, spelling and punctuation, the preterit and imperfect and common uses of the subjunctive. Spanish is the language of instruction and interaction. Prerequisite: SPAN 2050 or equivalent.

Objectives: Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:

• Write and speak Spanish with increased confidence.
• Better understand basic concepts behind Spanish grammar.
• Manipulate verb tenses and mood more appropriately.
• Operate at the advanced intermediate level in reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension.

In addition to required readings, the use of a high-quality dictionary is indispensable.Do not relyon Internet dictionaries. The following text would be a good grammar resource:

Grades are not curved.

Participation/Attendance: Consistent and informed participation is perhaps the single most important component of the learning experience. This involves preparing material ahead of time and thinking about the questions involved. Missing more than 3 classes for any reason will have a substantial negative effect on the grade: each subsequent absence will deduct one point from the final grade. Note that arriving late or leaving early will also affect the grade: two such occurrences count as one absence from class. Lackluster performance significantly lowers the participation grade. Take responsibility for your learning! Each student is responsible for reading, understanding, and following this syllabus.

In class activities& homework: Students will read and prepare for class. Students will answer short questions at the beginning of class time to ascertain their progress with the readings, homework exercises and discussions. Keep all your homework and other work filed and corrected. I will conduct random checks of your work. All in class activities and quizzes will be in this category. The lowest score may be dropped.

Essays: There will be two written formal essays. The grade will be based on the quality of analysis and comprehension, fluency of expression, grammar, and mastery of pertinent vocabulary.

Exams: There will be three exams during the semester. No make-ups are allowed without official documentation from a doctor or the university.

Final Exam: There will be a final exam on Friday May 11th at 10:30 a.m.

Outside help/ Academic integrity:Homework, compositions, and all assignments should be completed by the student independently. This means no help at all from technology or humans, except for in-class workshops. Cheating, plagiarism, and other examples of academic misconduct will be pursued and sanctions will be levied. More specifically, the student cannot copy others’ compositions or sentences from textbooks, the internet, etc. He/she CANNOT have another student, a tutor or friend/family CORRECT or TRANSLATE his/her work. The work should reflect the individual’s level of proficiency. Plagiarized work will result in a zero (0). For any specific questions about an assignment, please contact me during my office hours.
