Course/Rotation description with educational purpose/value

The goal of this rotation is to allow residents to develop skills in the areas of scholarship and discovery. At a minimum the resident must complete a project that fulfills one or more of the following scholarship criteria:

·  Discovery: as evidenced by publication or submission for publication of original research

·  Dissemination: as evidenced by a published review article for a journal, text book or medicine resident education

·  Application: as evidenced by publication of case reports or clinical series at local or regional meetings.

·  Credit for the rotation will not be given unless the resident fulfills one of the above categories of scholarship.

The rotation will vary widely based on project being undertaken. However, certain key facets of this rotation will remain the same as described below:

·  2-8 weeks prior to rotation

o  Meet with Dr. Ellrodt or Albert to discuss project and the question which will be addressed

o  Dr. Ellrodt or Albert will work with you to define plan outline and choose preceptor for the project

·  1-2 weeks prior to the rotation

o  Create a written syllabus with the following minimum requirements:

§  Specify exact curriculum for the rotation using the competency based goals and objectives FORM for the Academic Elective (Appendix A of Curriuclum). Samples of this curriculum One & Two can also be found in this appendix.

§  This Curriculum must be turned into Dr. Ellrodt or Albert and Preceptor prior to start of rotation

·  Week One: by the end of the week the resident must have:

o  Met with their preceptor to discuss project progress

o  Finished appropriate literature search

·  Week 2-4

o  Meet with preceptor weekly to review progress and set goals and expectations for coming weeks.

Unless academic medicine elective is performed as an away elective residents will continue their weekly continuity clinic, to attend all conferences, and will continue to provide patient care responsibilities as back up and / or jeopardy residents.

The Course Director recognizes that the residents are expected to attend all continuity clinics and mandatory educational conferences unless excused by the Program Director or Chief Medical Resident with advanced notice.
