Course Syllabus: AP US History

Course Description:
U.S. History is a required course for any diploma type sought. The course covers the history of the United States starting with the first settlers and finishing with the War on Terror. Most of the focus will be between European settlement in the 1600’s through present history because this is what the state mandated End-of-Course-Test (EOCT) will assess along with the AP College Board Exam. We will evaluate and interpret American History politically, socially, and economically using a chronological setup. Students will be expecting to always be prepared for class with paper and writing utensil, and we also REQUIRE they keep a notebook. This course covers a vast amount of information in a short time, making organization key to success. Teachers will be available to help students throughout the class period as well as before and after school.

***Make-up work is the student’s responsibility!!!!! If absent, it is the students responsibility to find out what was missed. The student will have as many days of excused absences missed to make-up work. Work that is not completed will be given a zero. Students may make-up work, but students will be deducted 15 points a day for missing work. A low grade is better than no grade. Self-discipline is a must.
**** Please note that if you miss a test or a quiz, you will only have ONE WEEK to make up that assignment. If you do not make it up, you will receive a zero in the grade book. A student will have the opportunity to retake a CDA once. The following criteria must be met in order to retake a CDA: 1. The student must stay one hour before/after school with the teacher (over 2 days) to go over the material. 2. The student must take the CDA within one week of its original test date.
CELL PHONE POLICY
Per Douglas County Schools Handbook: Cell phone use is not permitted during instructional time, unless a teacher has authorized cell phone use. Alexander High School is not responsible for lost or stolen cell phones. Students will be assigned discipline for subsequent infractions.
If I ask a student to put their phone/music device away and the student does not comply – they will be written up on a referral to the office for insubordination.
Grading Plan:
40%: Summative Grades (CDA’s, Summative Tests, Projects, Papers(DBQs, Mid-terms, Finals)
30%: Formative Grades (Class work, Quizzes, Homework, and other similar items)
20%: End of Course Test
10%: Mid-term, Final/SLO
Strategies for Student Learning:
We are aware that different students learn information differently; therefore, we will be using a variety of learning methods in class. Lecture, discussion, individual work, research, group work, internet activity, and information displays (posters, timelines, booklets, scrapbook, etc). All students and parents need to be aware, however, that this course is jam-packed and carries a state-mandated test that we must prepare each student for. Because of this, the most effective and efficient methods of teaching that are conducive to the majority of the class will be used most often. Of course, if a student is falling behind and requires extra help, appointments can be made with us, and we also have subject area tutoring once a week after school.

Lost Book Policy:

The student will be charged for a textbook lost, regardless of condition. The amount to be charged for a textbook damaged by a student will be the responsibility of the principal.

At AlexanderHigh School, the student is urged to seek truth and beauty in and for themselves, as well as skills needed for a productive life. Academic honesty is essential in preserving one's own integrity, the integrity of the school, and in gaining a true education. The AlexanderHigh School student pledges not to lie, cheat, or steal in the pursuit of his or her studies and is encouraged to report those who do. Improper academic conduct on the part of the student shall be interpreted to mean the obtaining and using of information during an examination by means other than those permitted by the teacher, including the supplying of such information to other students. Improper academic conduct shall also include plagiarism, i.e., the purchase and use of ghost-written papers and reports, or incorporating into a report, term theme, research paper, or project, ideas and information obtained from another person without giving credit to the person from whom such information was obtained. Further, inclusion of the published or unpublished writings of another person without duly noting these sources according to normal scholarly procedures shall be considered plagiarism.
