INTRODUCTION
This Workplace Inspection Schedule allows staff to participate directly in their workplace safety and feel a sense of ownership of the process. Inspection teams will be organised by the School L3 Health and Safety Consultation Committee and should include staff from the area to be inspected, to provide local knowledge of the workplace, and staff from outside the area to be inspected, to provide a fresh perspective of the area.
STRUCTURE
The inspection is recorded on one or two HS Unit forms:
- Workplace HS Workplace Inspection Checklist – Office HS048a
- Workplace HS Workplace Inspection Checklist –Laboratories, Workshop, Non-Office HS048b
PROCESS
Theinspection checklists allow for all areas of the School to be inspected and assessed, in order to continually improve safety in the workplace.

Who Conducts the Inspection
Inspection teams will be organised and assigned at each School L3 Health and Safety Consultation Committee. ‘Laboratory Inspections for Next Meeting’ will be a fixed Agenda Item. To ensure that staff take control of their workplace safety and feel a sense of ownership of the process, inspection teams should include staff from the area to be inspected.
At any time the inspection teams can use alternates and call on any member of the School L3 HS Consultation Committee for assistance.
How to Inspect
The inspection checklists serve as a guide for evaluation of UNSW workplaces (additional items and categories may be added to suit local needs, but none may be removed). A tick in the NO box requires corrective actions (CA’s) to be determined by the room/area manager/supervisor in consultation with inspectors. CA’s must be added to the myUNSWHazard/Incident reporting system (online).
If you cannot verify an item then place a mark in the “Can’t Tell” column for follow-up with the area supervisor or school safety officer at a later time.
Where fixtures such as lighting, doors, etc are found to be defective, a building fault should be reported to F.M. Assist via the School Safety/Facilities Officer or by calling Ext 55111.
Analysis
The completed inspection checklists should be provided to the school safety officer for collection and filing. myUNSW and regular corrective actions reporting (through PiMS) will be used to analyse and track issues identified during workplace inspections. The purpose is to ensure that the object of the inspections, continuous improvement in workplace safety, is occurring.
