Host Application Form /
There are two parts to this application process. Part a) is this application form. Part b) will
consist of a visit to your museum by a member of MGS staff to meet the staff involved
in the application, at a mutually convenient date between the 18thand 30th March. 2018
Please answer all the questions. Please read attached guidance before completing the form.
Please complete one form for each Traineeship you are applying to host.
Terminology
For the purpose of Skills for Success we are using the terminology ‘Learners’ and ‘Learning Placements’ to reflect that this is a learning programme and is not a form of employment. Our previous programme referred to learners as ‘trainees’ and the learning placement as a ‘traineeship’. The change of terminology does not indicate a shift in the type of opportunity provided to new entrants or in the relationship the host museum will have with their learner. It is simply to provide clarification to all parties. It is expected that the name of the role will still contain trainee e.g collections trainee etc.

Please answer all the questions.

Section 1 - About you
1.1 Name of organisation
1.2Name of museum or gallery
This should be the main museum or gallery that will provide the learning experience and it must be accredited. Non accredited museums can be partners in the programme but the lead museum must be accredited.
1.3Contact details
Name of main contact will normally be the senior museums officer or the head of the museum service. They will be the person with authority to sign the application and the person who will be informed of the decision.
1.4Is this a partnership application? If yes, tell us who your partner(s) are and briefly tell us why you want to work together to provide a learning placement.
We welcome partnership applications where the learning experience benefits from the learner being based in more than one organisation. However, we do expect you to have considered the practicalities from the learner’s perspective and to show us by how you answer Section 3, that this will be realistic for them. We expect that one of the organisations will act as the lead partner and be responsible for co-ordinating and ensuring the quality of the learning placement. Travel expenses between partner locations will not be paid.
1.5Name of person who will supervise the leaner and oversee their learning plan.
We expect this would normally be one person for the duration of the learning placement, who takes the overarching responsibility for the Learner’s learning. We also expect the Learner to work alongside a numberof people during the learning placement.
1.6Please describe: a) The skills and experience of the supervisor in relation to this role and,b) What support the supervisor will get within your organisation.
a) We would like a brief description as to the skills and experience the supervisor has and why they meet the Supervisors role detailed in the host application pack.
b) We are looking for evidence that there is a system in place to ensure the supervisor receives support in their role in this project. Please detail a name and brief description of how this support will be structured. The success of the programme is dependent upon a confident and supported supervisor.
1.7Please tell us alittle about why you would like to supervise a learner.
We would like to hear a brief description from the point of view of a) the organisation and b) the supervisor. Please include what benefits and experiences this opportunity will present.
BACK TO SECTION 1 >
Section 2 – About the skills your proposed Learning placement will develop
2.1Please tell us what you would like your learning placement to be called and whether you are interested in hosting an Entry level Learner or a Management level Learner.
The name should reflect the skills or specialisms that will be learned but should also take into account how the position will fit into your organisation, so other staff understand it. For example: Collections Trainee; Learning Programmes Trainee. Please avoid titles that suggest the Learner is a member of staff, such as ‘Assistant’. If you are opting for a generic role, then the title should reflect this for example Museum Trainee.
2.2Please give a short overview of your museums and provide a short summary describing the proposed learning placement.
Please give a brief statement about your organisation and how you would describe the proposed learning placement. This will be used for promotional purposes.
2.3Which of the following areas could your organisation support?
Please indicate by ticking all the units your organisation could support. These units should reflect the description you provide in 2.2, however, should not be exclusive. Whilst the learner will complete all mandatory units, there is an element of choice, in discussion with the host, regarding the additional modules the learner may choose to pursue. Clearly, these units must fit within the theme of the learner as described by the host in 2.2. We need to avoid the learner hoping to complete units that the host is not in a position to support.
BACK TO SECTION 2 >
Section 3 – About the work-based training you will provide for your Learner
When completing this section, please bear in mind that there will be an external assessor qualified in assessing SVQs who will be in regular contact with the Learner and the supervisor to help support and facilitate the learning and evidence gathering.
3.1Who will the Learner learn their skills from?
Please name all the individuals you expect to take part. Please outline their roles in the organisation and describe their expected role in supporting the Learner. Where possible you should refer to the skills you identified in section 2.
3.2How will you provide a quality learning experience for your Learner?
In answering thisquestion you should focus on what specifically you will do (not the wider environment or culture of the organisation which is covered in Section 5). Please tell us about the named supervisor and the supervision arrangements you have planned. You should tell us about the range of activities, tasks, projects and programmes you will use to give the Learning their learning experience and any direct training or coaching that staff will provide. You should offer a range of approaches to learning and tell us how these will give the Learning a high quality learning experience.
