Mississippi Children’s Museum celebrates Read Across America Week

Jackson, Miss. (February 7, 2017) – Take part in a nationwide reading celebration by joining us at Mississippi Children’s Museum (MCM) on Saturday, February 25 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm for Dr. Seuss’ Silly Birthday Celebration! This annual event is in conjunction with Read Across America, an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading around the birthday of beloved children's author, Dr. Seuss.

At MCM, children and families can participate in hands-on, multi-sensory experiences based out of Seuss’ literary world. Create your own Lorax mustache or Cat in the Hat top hat, experiment with oobleck science, embellish Fox in Socks puppets, and participate in a ‘green-eggs-and-ham’ cooking demonstration. Visitors can also test their rhyming knowledge, listen to silly story times, and bring home the fun memories with a photo of Thing 1 and Thing 2!

MCM encourages children to think outside the box to explore a world of literacy, storytelling, and imagination. “Dr. Seuss’ books open a door to the world of silly ideas and yet it provides sensible thinking. The whimsy of his illustrations and words are enjoyable at a variety of learning levels,” says Assistant Director of Programs, Patti Reiss.

Thank you to our sponsors who help to make this experience possible for all of Mississippi’s children: Presented by the Barksdale Reading Institute; and sponsored by Paul Moak Subaru, Whole Foods Market of Jackson, and The Radio People.

Dr. Seuss’ Silly Birthday Celebration is a high traffic day for the museum. To aid in our visitors’ safety, MCM is encouraging visitors to park at Smith-Wills Stadium and ride the Big Red Wagon to and from the museum. This transportation will be free of charge and will continuously run from 12:00 to 4:00 pm.

All activities are included with $10 general admission or MCM membership. For more information, visit www.mschildrensmuseum.org.
