Position Status: Part-time consultant (approximately 6 days per month)

Start date: January 2018

Objective

To represent TFO Canada in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and to establish and maintain relationships with local importers, trade support organisations and locally based trade representatives of TFO Canada’s client countries, in order to promote and advance TFO Canada’s mandate of forging market linkages between developing country exporters and the Canadian marketplace.

Responsibilities:

  1. Work collaboratively with the Ottawa TFO Canada team on identified priorities.
  2. Maintain and build TFO Canada’s database of buyers/importersregistered on the TFO Canada web site.
  3. Identify, build and maintain working relationships with appropriate GTA business associations, networks and business media in order to broaden TFO Canada’s base of Canadian importers and enhance TFO Canada visibility, includingattending relevant trade shows in the GTA.
  4. Participate in activities of these organisations that are relevant to TFO Canada’s mandate and which will promote TFO Canada services to Canadian importers, including where feasible making formal presentations about TFO Canada and its services.
  5. Maintain and build relationships with selected developing country foreign commercial officers/trade representatives based in the GTA in order to promote TFO Canada services.
  6. Conduct regular meetings, seminars, discussions or other activities to build the capacity of commercial officers/trade representatives based in GTA.
  7. Contribute information on regional activities to TFO Canada newsletters and other communications produced by TFO Canada and help identify success stories.
  8. When requested, assist other TFO Canada staff and TFO Canada Associates in the identification of importers and other appropriate contacts for incoming trade missions in the Greater Toronto Area which are receiving support from TFO Canada.
  9. When requested, assist with securing supplier relationships (e.g. hotels, logistics) for incoming trade missions.
  10. When requested, participate inTFO Canada staff meetings approximately once per year.
  11. Prepare a brief work plan and budget and submit quarterly reports.
  12. Submit time sheets and expense claims in accordance with TFO Canada policies and procedures.

Qualifications:

  1. 5 years experience facilitating exporters to access the Canadian Market
  2. Expertise in one or more of the following sectors: fresh fruit and vegetables, processed food, textiles and apparel, handicrafts and home décor, foot ware, cosmetics
  3. Knowledge of key stakeholders and regulations related to importing to Canada
  4. Experience with developing countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America
  5. Speak English and one other language (Spanish/French)
  6. Good organization and communication skills

Resources provided by TFO Canada

  1. Reimbursement for required travel to Ottawa, or other parts of Canada (on a pre-authorised basis).
  2. Reimbursement for approved expenses (e.g. local travel, participation in local trade association activities, organizing seminars, etc.)
  3. Microsoft e-mail account with online access
