5th ORDER OF BUSINESS:Algebra/Pre-algebra Policy

The Algebra/Pre-algebra Policy was examined and approved with the addition of an appeals policy. The Policy is as follows.

To ensure success for all students SLMS will use the following procedures to determine eligibility for Pre-Algebra (7th grade) and Algebra I (8th grade).

The following pre-requisites were set for 7th grade Pre-Algebra:

1.) Students must pass an end of year post-test with 80% accuracy.

2.) End of year course grade of an A or B in 6th grade Math class.

The following pre-requisites were set for 8th grade Algebra I:

1.) Students must pass an end of year post-test with 80% accuracy.

2.) End of year course grade of an A or B in 7th grade Math/Pre-Algebra class.

Students entering SLMS or requesting a schedule change into Pre-Algebra or Algebra I will need to meet listed requirements.

If a student does not meet the pre-requisites for Pre-Algebra or Algebra I, then the student’s parents/guardians may request to appeal the math course placement to the Site Based Decision Making Council. The request may be made until the end of the first ten instructional days of the school year or the student’s enrollment at SLMS.

6th ORDER OF BUSINESS: 8th grade math classes

A discussion was held about the present practice of every student in 8th grade being required to take an additional math class if they are enrolled in Algebra. The present practice is not a SBDM policy at this time but has been general practice. The reason behind taking the additional math class is that Algebra does not cover all the strands of math. However, this practice has come in conflict with students being able to take band and chorus. This affects a small number of students, who tend to be high achieving students; therefore if such a conflict does arise it is to be taken to the principal, who will make the decision as to whether or not it is to be allowed. The students past performance in math classes, placement test, PAS testing and KCCT testing will all be taken into consideration in making the decision.
