1. Introduction
Welcome to The York Management School at the University of York. You have joined a community of academic, technical and administrative staff, postgraduate and undergraduate students who are all dedicated to study and the advancement of knowledge. It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to this community and we all sincerely hope that you will enjoy your period of study and successfully achieve all that you set out to.
Your success in the Management Studies degree programmes is in your hands. As with any learning programme, what you get out of it depends directly on how much effort you put in to it. You could go through the motions of reading the material, writing some documents and just fulfilling the necessary hurdles to achieve your qualification. Approaching the University experience and programme in this way is missing the opportunity to tap into the wealth of knowledge which exists within the University. We would encourage you to use every opportunity to broaden your understanding of management, learn from those you come into contact with and use the resources of the University to the fullest.
We want you to succeed and will encourage you at every step of the way. On this note we all wish you every success in your studies and hope that you will enjoy your time with the University of York.
1.1 This Handbook
This handbook is intended as a guide for undergraduate students who are undertaking the following degree programmes in The York Management School at the University of York:
BA Management (2006-7, 2007-8 and 2008-9 entry)
BSc Management Systems (2006-7 and 2007-8 entry)
It is hereafter referred to as the Management handbook and contains details on programme structures and related modules.
For general information concerning University and The York Management School regulations and policies you should refer to the Policies, Information and Procedures (PIP) handbook. Both handbooks should be read in conjunction with each other.
We hope that you enjoy studying on this programme. If at any time you have any queries or suggestions that may enhance the programme then please do not hesitate to contact me.

1.2 Handbooks on the Web
This handbook shows the requirements specific to the Management programmes at the time of going to press. As part of The York Management School’s policy of continuous improvement, changes will be made and this handbook should therefore be considered as a guide rather than a definitive document. Upon request The York Management School will provide you with the latest position on any matter arising during your studies.
Both this Management handbook and the Policies, Information and Procedures (PIP) handbook exist in two forms: a paper edition and an on-line edition, accessible on the World-Wide Web. It is expected that it will generally be more convenient to access the on-line version than the paper version, and it is intended that the on-line edition will be kept continually up to date.
The on-line edition of the Management handbook also contains links to “module VLE pages”'. Each module web page is maintained by the lecturer who teaches the module, and contains information on resources relevant to the module, and announcements, such as news of changed lecture times or corrections to printed lecture notes.
The Editor would be pleased to receive notification by email of errors in this Handbook, and suggestions for its improvement. However, in general, module descriptions are the responsibility of the module co-ordinator; omissions, corrections and clarifications to those sections should be addressed to the person concerned.

All modules are 20 credits, except the dissertation which is 40 credits.
The above modules are those offered in 2008-09. The York Management School reserves the right to withdraw modules or add further modules in future years.
Open assessments are issued on the VLE. It is YOUR responsibility to ensure you pick up the assignment from the VLE when it is released.
3.4 Elective modules
Final year students are eligible to apply for elective modules of not more than 20 credits.
Applications will be considered on a case by case basis by the Head of Undergraduate Programmes and ratified by the Board of Studies.
Students MUST adhere to the following process to have elective modules considered for approval.
1. Check the module is running with the department offering the elective. It is not sufficient that the module appears on the elective compendium, as this may be out of date.
2. Check with the department offering the elective that the results of the assessment will be available to The York Management School by the end of week 9 in the summer term. Without these results being available you will not be able to graduate, hence modules without results will not be approved.
