SCNA OBJECTIVE

SCNA is dedicated to the promotion and advancement of numismatics in all its dimensions…convinced that the hobby has great potential for enriching lives of those who earnestly seek its gifts. Our principal means for this is the SCANNER, the official publication, sponsored awards which seek to promote and reward excellence in many areas of hobby activity; and the annual Convention…which provides without charge to the collector, investor and general public…South Carolina’s best program of numismatic education and services and the finest opportunity for buying and selling numismatic items.

Greetings, South Carolina Numismatists!

The dog days of summer are upon us but that does not mean that nothing is going on in numismatic community. The John Adams Presidential Dollar coins have been released and they have similar issues with the George Washington Dollars, containing missing or double stamping of the edge lettering. These mistakes have Congress’ attention and the debate is currently centering on having “In God We Trust” and “E Pluribus Unum” along with the date and mintmark returned to the face of these coins. A $20 gold coin was found in the wreckage of the Hunley submarine which was recovered off the coast of Charleston in 1995. There is an interesting story to go with the coin later in this issue of the SCanner. We have also witnessed the US Mints’ quick sellout of the First Lady Gold $10 coins. These sold out in about a day for the first two First Wives, Martha Washington and Abigail Adams. Similar sellouts are anticipated for the Jefferson and Madison gold coins.

The 35th Annual South Carolina Numismatic Association’s Annual Coin Show will take place this October 26-28, 2007 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Greenville. There is an exhibit application later in this issue of the SCanner and members are encouraged to exhibit any and all numismatic materials at the show. Awards will be given for best exhibit for both Young Numismatists and adults.

Greetings fellow collectors and SCNA members,

The SCNA is a club life member of the American Numismatic Association. As many of you know, the leadership and direction of the ANA has been questioned over the past few years by many members. There have been instances of hiring and firing of ANA staff that have been questioned. Management of the ANA endowment and the financial condition of the ANA has been scrutinized. To some, it appears that there has been a lack of transparency within the organization. Apparently there were enough disgruntled members, that when the votes were counted following the recent election, the entire ANA board was replaced. I have been a life member for years and have greatly enjoyed a half dozen Summer Seminars in Colorado Springs. I truly want the best for the ANA and the numismatic hobby in the future, as I am sure all of you do. The new board members ran on a platform of moving the ANA in a different direction. I will watch with interest over the next year to see what happens.

There have been several numismatic events and auctions since the last SCanner went out. The Memphis Paper Money Show occurred over the July 4th weekend. Unfortunately I was unable to attend this year. I enjoy “rooting out” anything South Carolina related. I will usually turn up a treasure or two. There have also been several large numismatic auctions consisting primarily of US coins. There are still many great coins being auctioned off. It appears that the prices realized are as high as ever, but prices do seem to be stabilizing and not advancing as rapidly as they were over the past few years. The stock market hit a record high a week or so ago, but has been very volatile since. It appears that the real estate market has finally started to slowly collapse from the speculation that drove price gains to unsustainable levels. The associated risky mortgages have taken several hedge funds down and have rattled the markets. If the stock market contracts along with the housing market, two large sources of cash flow for many individuals will disappear. This will probably cause the prices realized for expensive numismatic items to pull back somewhat. It is important to remember the numismatics is a hobby and a source of many enjoyable hours researching items in our collections and hunting for new additions. If you see your collection as primarily an investment, you will miss out on most of the enjoyment.

I have not been able to add much to my collection of banknotes or tokens this summer. However, I do have my eye on a certain South Carolina colonial note. I have almost “hit the wall” with my South Carolina colonial collection. I have 44 different varieties. There are a handful of notes I do not own that exist in quantities of at least a half dozen and I have seen them for sale occasionally. I think 50 will be a very difficult number to surpass. The challenge of rooting out number 51 is one of the exciting aspects of the hobby. First I need to capture number 45! I will let you know what happens in the next SCanner.

The South Carolina Numismatic Association will host its 35th annual convention October 26-28, 2007 at the Embassy Suites in Greenville. Approximately 75 dealers are expected and bourse chairman, Tony Chibbaro reports that the applications are coming in a furious pace and a sellout is certain. This is the third and final year that the convention will be held in the spacious ballroom at the hotel. The venue is located near the intersection of I-85 and I-38 at 670 Verdae Boulevard. The hotel has made available a block of rooms for the convention at a special rate (just mention SCNA to receive the discount) which includes a cooked to order breakfast and a two hour evening happy hour for each guest. Reservations can be made by calling 864-678-7126 and must be placed by September 25th, 2007 to be guaranteed the special SCNA rate.

The bourse floor will be open to the public from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Friday, October 26th, from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Saturday, October 27th and from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM on Sunday, October 28th. There is no admission fee and parking at the hotel is complimentary.

The convention will feature numerous competitive exhibits, as well as a pair of numismatic presentations scheduled for Saturday, October 27th. A general membership meeting (open to all SCNA members)of the SCNA will be held at 9:30 AM on Saturday morning in the Asheville Boardroom. A Young Numismatist program will follow at 11:00 AM. Bill Myers will present a program entitled Modern Day Military Tokens—AAFES POGS at 1:00 PM in the Asheville Boardroom followed by Error Coins and Paper Money by Bill Malinowski at 2:00 PM. Helen Barry, Stephen James CRSA Coin Club and SCNA member who was the former editor if this periodical, has been honored by the American Numismatic Association for work on the SCanner in 2006. The SCanner, under her stewardship, received an award for the ANA’s Outstanding Club Publication! She will be awarded this honor at the ANA Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on Saturday, August 11.
