Remind class they are going to make a collection of fire poems at the end of the unit. Discuss the work on the ‘Fire of London’ and show painting on IWB. Say that we are going to and mind-map some ‘fire’ words, thinking about the heat and movement of fire.
Turn lights off and light candle. Children observe closely. Talk to partner to describe what they see/feel.
Use 2-simple to mind map words for heat and movement.
Remind class how to use video cameras.

Remind class last week’s work on movement and sound words. Tell class that today they are going to focus on the colour and shape of fire. Turn out lights and light candles. Ask children what they see. Blow out flame and watch the smoke rise. Make flame shapes with hands and body. What does this shape remind you of? What colours do you see in the flame? Use 2-connect to mind-map shape and colour words. Choose an interesting ‘fire’ word and model writing on board changing letter shape/colour to match word meaning.

Read out Bonfire Dragon.
Explain that the poet has made us experience the fire by writing about it as though it was a dragon.
Look at text and ask children to highlight powerful words or phrases.
Draw a dragon and label eyes, claws, mouth, breath, skin. Which lines or phrases make you think of the skin? Repeat with other parts of the dragon.
