Education Abroad

Position Description:

The University of Connecticut Office of Global Affairs – Education Abroad exists to support UConn's global strategic objectives by providing accessible learning opportunities for students to become globally-minded and engaged critical thinkers committed to making an impact in their communities.Education Abroad prepares students to become more autonomous global citizens, able and willing to respond well to the opportunities and challenges of globalization.

The Graduate Assistant for Education Abroad will report to the Associate Director and will assist in the coordination of services and resources for UConn students and their families. The office provides a dynamic, student-centered environment that will allow the incumbent to develop essential skills and experience for future positions in education abroad and international education. This is a two-year assistantship pending a satisfactory performance after the first year.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a visible resource to students, staff, faculty, and others on matters relating to education abroad programs, procedures, and activities
  • Facilitate workshops and events for student pre-departure preparation, visa support, and re-entry reflection
  • Conduct office research projects, such as the integration of programming into academic curricula, the improvement of program accessibility and equity, and the planning of assessment strategies and their implementation
  • Assist with the management, scheduling, and supervision of front-desk student worker staff
  • Support the advising staff, including greeting visitors, answering phones, responding to the office email account, handling mail, and booking rooms
  • Help maintain the office website, the Terra Dottaapplication database, and social media accounts
  • Participate in evening and weekend events, as required
  • Fulfill other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Enrollment in the University of Connecticut Higher Education and Student Affairs graduate program for the duration of the assistantship assignment
  • Experience working with college students
  • Computer literacy and competency, particularly with programs in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher) and social networking sites (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, etc.)
  • Ability to work as part of a team and be flexible in prioritizing assigned responsibilities
  • Good administrative and organizational skills, including ability to identify and resolve administrative problems
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience studying, teaching, living, or working outside the United States
  • Research and/or instructional interest in international education and/or education abroad
  • Proficiency in a language other than English
  • Ability to work over the summer
