There are many simple electronic spirometers available; to be clinically useful it should measure Vital Capacity (VC), Forced Vital Capacity (FVC), Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 second (FEV1), Forced Expiratory Flow 25 to 75% (FEF25-75%) and Maximal Voluntary Ventilation (MVV). Of greater diagnostic value would be a Flow-Volume Loop Generator. Also see comments Item 1.

The model we have is 8” x 14” (64 cubic inches), too small for the volume of items that we sterilize. To help waste management we try to avoid disposable items.

Longer lengths are preferred for ease when transporting patients; other characteristics: injection site distance from distal end, priming volume, # of injection sites, check valves, control clamps, vented vs. non vented- in general more is better.
