Grade 8Life Science Course Syllabus
In Life Science we will study Cell Biology on the cellular and Molecular levels, and how different organisms function and interact with theirenvironment. In this class we will learn aboutall living things and Ecology, in addition to Human Anatomy and Physiology.

- Term I:
Introduction to Living things, Introduction to Cells, Cell Processes and Energy, Genetics: The Science of Heredity, DNA: The Code of Life,
- Chapters: 1,2, 3, 4, 5.
- Term II:
Change over time, Animal Life Processes, Introduction to the Human Body, Controlling Body Processes.
- Chapters: 6, 7, 8, 9.

Populations and communities, Ecosystems and Biomes, Balance within Ecosystems.
- Chapters: 10, 11, 12, 13,
Course Materials:
The major text and/or resources used in Life Science:
- Text Book:InteractiveScience – LifeScience, Pearson Education Inc. 2011.
- Notebook:For class work and class assignments.
- Folder: For keeping corrected assignments and tests, quizzes, Summaries and Lab experiments documents.
Teacher Expectations:
Depending on the grading description following things are required by the students in order to achieve maximum marks.
Grading:
- Class Behavior : 15%
- Class Work( with Lab Work): 20%
- Homework : 15%
- Quizzes : 20%
- Tests : 30%
- Class Behavior (15%): As you can see this section has significant weightage in your overall performance so it is required that the students pay real attention to it.
1) Students are expected to attend the class regularly and on time. Disciplinary action will be taken for the students who do not abide by it.
2) No discussion or talking among students without teacher’s permission will be allowed in the class.
3) Eating, chewing, drinking is totally prohibited in class.
4) Non-serious attitude will not be tolerated.
5) No cracking of jokes and irrelevant comments will be tolerated on each other or with the teacher.
6) Students should not touch the board or play with School’s property.
7) Bathroom visits are discouraged during the class.
8) Respect of peers and teacher is expected and the student violating it will have to go through disciplinary action.
9) Use proper language with your peers in class.
10) If there is a question or query, raise your hands and on permission ask your teacher.
11) Strictly follow teacher’s instruction during the class.
12) If a student fails to attend an assignment, quiz or a test he would be required to submit an application regarding that absence and with deliberation a decision will be taken. If the excuse is found worthy of consideration then he might be given a second chance or a deadline otherwise his grades will get effected.
13) Absent student from a regular class are expected to look for the class work from their classmates as soon as possible. He/she will be given only a day’s relaxation till the work of the missed class is completed.
14) On regular absence from class, quizzes, tests or on unacceptable behavior parents might be notified and called in and a disciplinary action will be taken.
15) ANA discipline flow chart will be followed for any offenses in class
- Class Work + Lab Work (20%) :Your class work marks will depend on the following points:
1) Keeping your notebooks, files and folders updated for random checks.
2) Coming prepared in each class for surprise quizzes. Expect quiz in every class.
3) Assignment and quiz results.
4) Class activity and participation.
5) Submitting your take home and in-class assignments on time.
6) Following the rules of lab and performing lab with great precaution.
7) Writing your lab work in proper manner such as objective, instruments used, procedure, precaution, observation and result.
8) Maintaining the Lab cleanness.
- Homework (15%):
1) Make sure to complete homework on time.
2) Make sure to memorize the scientific vocabulary and definitions.
3) You can be asked to do it again in front of the class or teacher.
4) If found that the student has copied from his/her peer, disciplinary action will be taken and marks will not get counted.
- Quizzes (20%):
1) Expect quiz in each class
2) Expect Science Recitation (Scientific Vocabulary and definitions).
3) If a student fails to submit quiz he would be required to submit an application regarding that absence and with deliberation a decision will be taken. If the excuse is found worthy of consideration then he might be given a second chance or a deadline otherwise his grades will be effected.
- Tests (30%) : At the completion of a chapter:
1) Test will be properly announced before time.
2) Test are expected after the completion of a chapter.
3) If a student fails to appear in a test, he would be required to submit an application regarding that absence and with deliberation a decision will be taken. If the excuse is found worthy of consideration then he might be given a second chance or a deadline otherwise his grades will get effected.
4) If a student doesnot perform well in a test, then his overall performance in all other categories will be considered and based on that he/she will be allowed a Re-test Or other alternative.
5) If a student’s performance continues to be below average, then parents might be contacted and notified so that we can find betterstrategies to help the student succeed.
Lab:
- Lab equipment is ANA property and MUST be respected.
- DO NOT open and remove materials from the lab supply cabinet without permission
- DO NOT aim or threaten other students with sharp or hot objects in lab.
- Follow directions at all times.
- All students must complete any pre-lab assignments before.
- Some of the chemicals and materials we use are hazardous and must be treated with great respect.
- Students will be advised on safety precautions.
- Accidents happen, but if an “accident” happens because a student is behaving inappropriately and lab equipment is damaged, the student will be responsiblefor replacing the broken item.
