Welcome to the season!

Thank you for your willingness to coach or manage a team at North Bankstown Soccer Club. It is always a challenging time when we are setting up for the new season, and we appreciate the help that you are giving to us.

To help make it easier for you, we have put together this manual that hopefully gives you general guidance so that it as easy for you as possible. It also has some training tips and information that the parents are likely to ask you for.

In the clubhouse, on the far wall, you will find a pigeon-hole box. Each team has it’s own section, and each training night, you should go and check there before training to see if there is anything new. This could be handouts, or newsletters, or any other general information that you might need to hand out to the parents. This allows it to be handed out by the manager while training is still taking place. If you leave it until after the training, parents and players have a habit of disappearing, and then they miss out on important information.

A general rule is to direct your parents to our website. We will try and make sure that this is as up to date as can possibly be. Cancellations of training sessions etc will be on the front of that page as soon as we get the information.

They can also go to that website to get the latest draw for the weekend.

Please try and get them to use this instead of the association’s page, as late changes are not always shown there.

We have tried to make sure that there is information on our web page at to help you. Under the resources tab on that page, you will find coaching resources, team sheets etc and information that we think you will find helpful.

If there is any other questions that you have, please come and see us!

Player's Code
  • I will treat all players in my sport as I like to be treated. I will not bully or take unfair advantage of another competitor
/
  • I will be a good sport and applaud all good plays whether they are made by my team or the opposition

  • I will not arrive at the venue intoxicated or drink alcohol at junior matches
/
  • I will display modesty in victory and graciousness in defeat

  • I will respect the rights, dignity and worth of all participants regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion

  • I will participate for my own enjoyment and benefit, not just to please parents and coaches

  • I will never argue with an official. If I disagree with a decision I will inform the captain, coach or manager during a break or after the competition
/
  • I will control my temper. I understand that verbal abuse of officials and sledging other players and deliberately distracting or provoking an opponent are not acceptable or permitted behaviours in any sport

  • I will work equally hard for myself and/or my team
/
  • I will always play by the rules

  • I will cooperate with my coach, team mates and opponents
/
  • I will thank the opposition and officials at the end of the game

Parent Code
  • I won’t pressure my child in any way
    – I know that this is their game not mine
  • I will not use bad language, nor will I harass players, coaches, officials or other spectators
  • I will encourage my child to play within the rules and respect officials’ and coaches’ decisions – no matter what
  • I will teach my child to respect the efforts of their opponents
  • I will remember that children learn best by example so I will applaud good plays/performances by both my child’s team and their opponents

/
  • I will give positive comments that motivate and encourage continued effort
  • I will focus on my child’s efforts and performance – not the score
  • I will thank the coaches, officials and other volunteers who give their time to conduct the event for my child
  • I will help when asked by a coach or official
  • I won’t criticise or ridicule my child’s performance after the game
  • I will not arrive at the venue intoxicated or drink alcohol at junior matches

Coach Responsibilities

  • Provide a safe environment.
  • Activities must be adequately planned.
  • Players must be evaluated for injury and incapacity.
  • Safe and proper equipment should be provided.
  • Players must be warned of inherent risks of the sport.
  • Activities must be closely supervised.
  • Develop clear rules for training and conduct.
  • Coaches should keep adequate records.

Coaches Code of Behaviour

  • Be reasonable in your demands on young player’s time, energy
  • Whenever possible, group players to give the best possible chance of success.
  • Avoid over playing talented players. All players need and deserve equal time.
  • Remember that children participate for fun and enjoyment and that winning is only part of that motivation. Never ridicule or yell at the children for making mistakes or losing a competition.
  • Ensure that equipment and facilities meet safety standards and are appropriate to the age and ability of the players.
  • Take into consideration the maturity level of the children when planning the length of training.
  • Develop team respect for the ability of opponents as well as for the judgment of officials and opposing coaches.
  • Follow the advice of a physician when determining when an injured player is ready to recommence training or competition.
  • Make a personal commitment to keep yourself informed of sound coaching principles of growth and development of children.
  • Avoid use of derogatory language based on gender or nationality.

Coaching Tips

Demonstrate / Repeat exercise several times
Highlight key points
Practice / Allow plenty of time with ball
Progress from simple to complex
Allow enough time for repetition
Observe / Use praise not criticism
Position yourself so that you can see all players
Coach / Be a positive and supportive emphasis
Re-demonstrate skill if required

1. Always check the field prior to commencing training or games.

2. Keep warm-up to a minimum and try to vary the warm up session to keep them interesting.

3. Vary your training sessions by starting with a small-sided game, not always completing the session with a game.

4. The coach should always select teams when playing small sided games as this saves time and avoids the same players being picked last.

5. When conducting small-sided games at training, make it interesting by naming each team i.e. England vs. Holland etc.

6. When teaching a topic (i.e. switching play) explain it first then demonstrate this will remove any confusion.

7. Once you have explained the exercise and demonstrated it, let the players practice the exercise. The coach should stand outside the practice and observe the players conducting it.

8. If the players are having trouble conducting the new exercise, bring them back in and explain and demonstrate again as your last explanation and demonstration may not have been clear enough for the players are not ready to conduct that exercise. If only one or two players are having trouble, allow the exercise to continue while you coach those individuals having trouble. Try using another player to demonstrate try shares confidence.

Duties of Teams

Part of being in a community club means that we all work together. This means that if your team is the first on a field, your team is required to provide assistance in setting up. This is also true at the end of the day. If your team is the last on a field, then you are needed to assist in packing up the fields. This includes taking the nets down folding them and placing them in the storage bins, collecting all corner flags and putting them away in the bin with the nets and safely and securely place them in the store room. If you don’t know where something goes, ask a committee member.

Wet Weather

BDAFA will notify the Club Secretary as soon as possible about any ground closures. This may be either Friday night or Saturday morning. This information will be passed on to coach/managers. The coach/manager will inform player/parents of games being cancelled.

A general rule is that if you have not heard from us, then soccer is ON! Do not presume games will be cancelled due to rain.

Forfeits

If you know that your team is not going to be able to play, we need to give the association notification, or else we will be fined.

Please make sure that you tell us as soon as possible if there is a game that your team is not going to be able to play.
