Construction and Outdoor Maintenance

Introduction

Construction and Outdoor Maintenance is a one year career education course. This course is designed to give students the opportunity to learn different aspects of small and simple construction and outdoor maintenance work. During the year the student will receive classroom training and extensive hands on experience.

I am Mr. Heumann and have been a member of the South Tech faculty for 18 years and appreciate the opportunity to work with you during the school year. The construction trade building is located in the south west corner of the campus in the same area as the buses.

Uniform/Tool Requirements

Provided by Student:

• Work pants with a hammer loop and side hip pocket, a belt, and a sleeved shirt

• Hard soled, leather boots

• Safety glasses (Z87)

• 25 foot Tape measure (without fraction marks or metric increments)

Attendance Policy

For all absences, written documentation from parent/guardian is required to be presented to the attendance secretary within 2 school days after the student returns from an absence. Students are expected to attend school when the technical school is in session even if their home school is not open. If a student misses more than 8 school days during the semester, his/her credit will be withheld. Students missing more than 5 school days during a semester will not receive a grade higher than a B for

the semester. Students missing more than 8 school days during the semester will not receive a grade higher than a C for the semester. If a student must miss a technical high school session to attend a homeschool activity, it is the responsibility of the student to provide documentation from the homeschool within 2 school days following the homeschool event and the absence will not count against the student’s attendance record.

A Typical Day

The Construction and Outdoor Maintenance course is designed to allow each student, willing to participate, an opportunity to attain knowledge and success in project completion as well an academic achievement. A normal day will find the students working on related academics in a classroom setting, with periodic testing. The majority of the class will be spent working in a hand on environment. The students related and test work will be weighed the same as participation but only account for a small portion of their grade, since the majority of the learning will be done working on, and building projects as well as outdoor maintenance on the South Tech campus.

A list of hands on projects may include and are not limited to:

Bricklaying

Skid steer Loader Operation

Small electrical circuits

Wood working Projects

Simple 2x4 framing, dry wall installation and Taping

Sweat soldering copper pipe

Gluing PVC pipe

On Campus outdoor Maintenance

Skills USA

Skills USA is the student leadership and competition organization to which bricklaying major belongs and all students are encouraged to belong and to participate. Each student will have the opportunity to engage in leadership exercises and to compete in a variety of categories from public speaking to skills demonstrations.

Grading

All grades are a total of points earned out of points possible and are posted regularly on the districts School Information System or SIS. Please register so that you can be kept up-to-date on progress.

I have read the Construction Innovation rules and expectations, grading system, tool requirements, and safety guidelines, and agree to follow them to the best of my ability.
