WELSHGOVERNMENT–COLLECTIONOFPUPILDATAANDRECORDINGDATAONPUPILS’NATIONALIDENTITY,ETHNICBACKGROUNDANDUSEOFTHEWELSHLANGUAGE

Arrangementsforthecollectionofinformationonpupils,introducedbytheWelshGovernment,meanthatsomeoftheinformationhastobecollectedfrom parents.Parentsare requiredtogiveinformationregarding theabilityto speakWelshandtheuseofWelshinthehometogetherwithinformationonthe“nationalidentity”and“ethnicbackground”ofpupils.

I enclose aform for you tofill intoprovidetherequiredinformation.I wouldbe grateful ifyou couldcompletetheformbyplacingatickin theappropriateboxesand returningit totheheadteacherofyourchild’s school intheenclosedenvelope, orbytakingit totheschooloffice,as soonas possible,and by20thJanuary, 2017, atthelatest.

Theinformationyouprovidewill be used tocompilestatisticsontheschool careers,experiencesandachievementsofpupilsfrom differentethnicbackgroundsandwill help tohighlight anyareas inwhichpupilsfrom particularethnicbackgrounds maynot enjoytheopportunitytofulfilltheir potential sothatthese areasmaybe addressed.

Thesestatisticswill not allowindividual children tobe identified publiclyand theinformationwill onlybe usedfor statisticalpurposes.Thisinformationwill be passedontotheLocalEducationAuthorityandtheWelsh Government to contribute to localandnationalstatistics.

Informationaboutyour child’s nationalidentityand ethnicbackgroundwill be passedontoanyother schooltowhichyour child transferstosaveyoubeing askedfor itagain.

If you donotwish toprovideyour child’s nationalidentityand/orethnic backgroundinformation,please ticktheappropriate boxorboxes ontheenclosedform.

If you donotreturntheform,this will not, in itself,amounttorefusaltoprovidetheinformation.Ifyouhavenotreturnedyourcompletedformwithinfourweeks, the schoolwilluse itsbest judgmentto assesstheethnicbackgroundofyour child,notingthattheinformationhasbeenarrived at inthis way, rather thanprovided byyou.Theschoolwillalso assessyour child’s abilityinWelshandtheuseofWelsh inthehome.Theschoolwilllet you knowthat it hasmadetheseassessmentsandyou canask tohavetheinformationalteredor removed,ifyouwish. Theschoolwill not, however, assess your child’s nationalidentity.

Pleasenotethatyoucan askto checkyour child’s information atanytime, and,ifyouwish,you mayhavethenationalidentityand/orethnicbackgroundinformationchanged orremoved.
