Course Review: The Student Store is course based on the operation of a small business. This course is designed from theperspective that students may want to start and operate their own business or be an effective, valuable employeein any business enterprise. Accordingly, they will be exposed to a combination of theory and real-worldapplications of how to develop and operate a small business.
This is a project based learning class that utilizes blended learning. It is different than most classes. There is aheavy use of technology blended with traditional instruction. Because it is a business class with this type ofemphasis it has a more real-world perspective. Students will be given projects to complete, individual and in peer groups. Like in the real-world we expect students to finish on time or ahead of schedule, with a high quality of workcompleted. Also as is in the real-world we expect the student to be proactive and begin work on the next task ratherthan sit back and kick their feet up.

Honesty Agreement: The State of Washington places extremely strict regulations on this type of class and requires acomplete reconciliation at the end of each school year. Shortages of money or inventory are ofprimary concern to the state and district auditors. As a result, all students will be held accountable fortheir actions. A Profit and Loss Statement will be submitted each quarter. Shortagesthat cannot be explained may be charged to the individual student. Each student and parent will sign the attached Honesty Agreement.
Expecations: Failure to comply with the rules below may be cause for removal from the class
- Anyone working in the student store must have a food handler's permit within the first 4 weeks of class.Failure to comply warrants immediate removal from the store. (This will be done in class during the first week.)
- Abusive or vulgar language, truants and tardies, and a lack of respect for the program or otherstudents will be cause for disciplinary action which could include removal from the store.
- Harassment of any form will not be tolerated.
- Any THEFT warrants immediate removal and a failing grade in the class.
- Cell phones and other electronic devices will not be used in this class unless you are using them for student store business.
Grading:The philosophy of Retail Operations is one of "learning by doing"; therefore, the grading scale willreflect this philosophy. You will be graded on daily participation and project completion. Daily participation consists of goodcustomer service, good attendance, taking initiative, completing delegated responsibilities, respectingall employees and arriving to class on-time and ready to work. Each week you will be given theopportunity to work in the store and in the class.
Grading categories and weights:
- 70% Daily Participation as measured by weekly work journals, employee evaluations, work completion and formative assessments.
- 30% Projects - these may include but are not limited to DECA competition, display creation, promotional activities and new product launches.
Skyward will be updated no less than every two weeks with current grades.
Attendance and Tardiness: Assisting students in establishing lifelong habits of reliability and promptness is an instructionalobjective in this particular course. Progress toward this goal will be measured, at least in part, bytracking student attendance. Therefore, a student’s grade or credit in this class may be adverselyaffected by reason of tardiness or absence.
Make-ups: You can make up your absence by working an extra shift if someone is absent, come in before orafter school to clean and stock the store, or create an extra promotion for the store. Students mustmake up any absence in order for their true performance to be reflected in their grade. You must
make arrangements to make-up your absence within 2 days.
