AN IMMEDIATE NOTE TO ASHA STANFORD FOR EXTENDING EMERGENCY SUPPORT FOR THE RAIN WATER AFFECTED PEOPLE OF THE TRIBAL VILLAGES UNDER AJODHAYA HILL

BACK GROUND:

Mandra Lions Club is working in this district specially tribal zone under Ajodhaya hill since last 20 years with the support from ASHA STANFORD through Basic Education Centers at 7 villages under School in Bag Programme (an initiatives on learning through mother tongue i.e. Santali using ALCHIKI script) and also from ASHA NEW JERSEY at 7 villages under ALOKE KENDRA (a replication units of School in Bag Programme) and ASHA CORNELL also supporting 5 education centers at Baghmundi block. = 19 centers in total ASHA has extend support.

The Problems:

The Purulia district itself a draught prone district in West Bengal since years. Last 2011, the area badly affected by sever draught which causes the domestic wells both drinking and other purposes and ponds are totally dry. Then we have requested ASHA to extend support for safe guarding the children of our projected villages. ASHA has extended their support to safeguard the children of our projected villages.

From August,2015 no such rain has happened till today9 THIS SITUTATION IS ALL OVER THE STATE OF BENGAL. The weather department informing that there is no possibility of immediate rain and the hotty situation will gradually increase which causes the people need to safe guard themselves. For this extreme hot weather is affecting the community people specially the children are badly affecting for water borne diseases and stomach problem.

All the wells and small river are totally dry and the people of Bagmundi block are using the dirty water for their bath and drinking purposes. Since last years the people of the Bagmundi Block and other surrounding block also suffered due to severe drought which causes health hazards and water borne disease for consuming unsafe drinking water, lack of proper cleanliness of utensils, skin disease for no bathing. for which the people are badly affected for want of drinking water. Now a good portion of people are suffering from water borne diseases and stomach problem, dysentery etc. So it can save the wage earners as well as provide safe drinking water which can guard the community people specially children from health hazards.

THE GOVERNMENT AUTHORITIES are now busy on assembly election of the Bengal i.e. are in control of Chief Election Commissioner of India. The Election starts on 4th April,2016 and end on 19th May,2016(Counting day). After the completion of counting the Ministry will form and distribute the port folio and the new plan and programme will be starts after june, 2016 i.e. the people will not get any person to speak for their problem. The Political leaders are not do anything except vocal tonic i.e. “will do after formation of ministry” etc. etc.

Finding no other alternative MLC trying to start immediate emergency to all the projected villages as well as other villages with active involvement of the people of the area.

THE BUDGET:

Tentative Budget of EMERGENCY SUPPORT FOR GRAUGHT AFFECTED CHILDREN AND PEOPLE OF AJODHAYA HILL UNDER BAGHMUNDI BLOCK OF PURULIA DISTRICT

Total population needed to support = 760 families about 5000 population

Including children

Support needed immediately :

For ORS to the children of centers – 4 packet to each child x 30 days

For water filters to 19 education centers – One time support

For re-excavation of existing drinking wells

(I.e. 5 to 10 ft average (7.5 ft) digging will be made which cost average Rs.3000/- per ft including the cost of cemented ring with 5 ft diameter each. The cost is approximately Rs. 22500.00 per well. The people are requesting to arrange all the 67 gram sansads’ community wells because it need for each and every one. But MLC after critically discussion prioritize the wells which come 35 no for immediate renovation and gradually by the government fund the rests will be done. For this advocacy with peoples’ pressure strategy will be used to motivate government on this line. The total fund required 35 no x Rs.22500.00 each = Rs.7, 87,500.00

Fund required:-

For ORS PACKET 4 x 1000 x30 days = Rs. 4, 80,000/-

For Water filter (BIG) 19 no @ 8000 Rs. = Rs 1, 52,000/-

For Re-excavation of drinking wells = Rs .7, 87,500/-

For basic Medicines (like Paracitamol suspension) = Rs. 0.10,000/-

Movement of the team = Rs. 0,05,000/-

Grand Total: = Rs.14, 44,500/-

NOTE: MLC now trying to link the Private medical Association for extending their support on basic medicines.
