Dear recruiting team,
I was pleased to see the opening of a Mechanical Engineer position within your company. With a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and a summer 2016 completion of a Master’s Degree also from WPI, I am prepared to make an immediate impact at Tech-etch.
My qualifications and accomplishments can be observed in the enclosed resume, but I wanted to highlight two important educational experiences I completed at WPI. WPI requires the completion of two major projects for graduation; the interactive qualifying project (IQP) and the major qualifying project (MQP). The interactive qualifying project focuses around working with and solving a social issue. The major qualifying project focuses around working on a project directly related to the student’s major.
· IQP – As a member of a four person team, each from a different major at WPI, studied in Tirana, Albania to assist with the countries’ electronic waste problem. Our sponsor, Recycle Albania, is a non-profit organization that strives to increase the amount of electronic waste that is collected and disposed of properly. We consulted marketing experts in Albania, interviewed existing and potential partner companies, recommended changes in promotional strategies and implemented changes in promotional materials. Several of the companies we visited agreed to partner with Recycle Albania. The increased number of partners for Recycle Albania is a step towards more electronic waste being properly recycled in Albania.
· MQP – As a member of a four man team, each in the Mechanical Engineering major at WPI, we were challenged to design, develop, and manufacture a single seat Mini-Baja 4X4 vehicle for competition. The success of the vehicle, at competition, will be driven by the individual subcomponents that make it unique. These include a dual differential four-wheel drive system, double wishbone suspension configuration in the front and rear, and a five speed manual transmission that were all designed and developed by our team using software simulations, finite analysis, and optimization to test subcomponent interactions and packaging considerations. To manufacture the design, local fabrication shops as well as the resources available on WPI’s campus were utilized.
Beyond my experiences, qualifications, and accomplishments, I have had numerous family members work at Tech-Etch. My mother worked on the chemical stripping line, my father worked as an etcher, and a research and development leader, and my grandmother worked in the drafting/engineering department. They all informed me of their great experiences while working with Tech-Etch and advised that I apply.
Enclosed is my resume for your review. I welcome the opportunity to discuss with you personally how my skills and strengths can best serve your workplace.
Sincerely,
Allan Burgess
