Richard Wainess Dissertation Study Procedure
- Introduce myself and EXPLAIN PURPOSE OF STUDY and the processes that will occur (3 min for #1 thru #5)USE INTRO FROM CONSENT FORM.
- Collect CONSENT FORMS.
- Have participants SIGN AND DATE SIGNATURE SHEET
- ASSIGN each participant to a preselected RANDOM NUMBER
- HAND EACH PARTICIPANT a packet marked with his or her number.
- DEMOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SHEET
- SR QUESTIONNAIRE (unless electronic version is used)
- Have subjects FILL OUT: (10 minutes for a & b combined)
- DEMOGRAPHIC INFO SHEET
- SR QUESTIONNAIRE
- INTRODUCE KNOWLEDGE MAPPING. (causes, contains, part of, used for) (10 min)
- INTRODUCE GAME. Hands-on from start through collecting objects in Room 1 (10 min)
- For treatment group: Hand out instructional map and INTRODUCE MAP USAGE TO TREATMENT GROUP and PATH STRATEGIES. (5 min)
- EXPLAIN PATH PLANNING TO CONTROL GROUP
- HAND OUT TASK 1 COMPLETION FORM AND EXPLAIN, describe the first task, and remind participants they will (a) perform task, (b) fill out task completion form, and (c) create a knowledge map. (5 min)
- For treatment group: HAND OUT FIRST MAP.
- Have participants PLAY GAME (15 min)
- Have participants SAVE GAME.
- Have participants fill out:
- TASK 1 COMPLETION FORM (1 min)
- PROBLEM SOLVING STRATEGIES QUESTIONNAIRE (4 min)
- KNOWLEDGE MAP (7 min)
- SAVE KNOWLEDGE MAP
- For TREATMENT: Hand out MAP FOR SECOND TASK.
- Have participants PLAY GAME A SECOND TIME. (15 MINUTES)
- Have participants SAVE GAME
- Have participants fill out
- TASK 2 COMPLETION FORM. (1 min)
- PROBLEM SOLVING STRATEGIES QUESTIONNAIRE (4 min)
- SECOND KNOWLEDGE MAP (7 min)
- SAVE KNOWLEDGE MAP
- Conduct study completion Q&A (3 min)
- ASK participants if they would be INTERESTED IN PLAYING SC some more. Note who’s interested. (30 min)
- OFFER PARTICIPANTS AN ADDITIONAL 3O MINUTES to play the game. Note who stays, as well as the comments of those who do not stay.
- MAKE A NOTE of those who stay but leave before the 30 minutes are up.
- After 30 minutes, announce the study is over.
