Precalculus with Trigonometry uses concepts from Algebra and Geometry. A student must have successfully passed College or Honors Algebra I, College or Honors Geometry and College Algebra II or Algebra II with Trigonometry. Any students who are unsure of the courses they have had should see Ms. Burris.
Precalculus is a rigorous mathematics course that extends the concepts learned in Algebra II and brings new concepts, primarily trigonometry, with the intent of building a bridge to advanced calculus or college calculus courses. The primary goal is to learn analytical and problem-solving skills by using algebraic, graphical, and numerical techniques, thus developing the necessary foundation for success in calculus.
CLASS MATERIALS
1. Three-ring (at least 1 ½”) notebook with dividers or 3-SUBJECT spiral notebooks
2. A homework spiral or a divided section in a 3 ring binder for homework
3. Pencil(s) - not pens, and an eraser
4. Textbook will be online and access will be given ASAP.
When 1:1 it is expected that the student bring the laptop to class to be used as directed.
5. GRAPHING calculator: TI – 83, TI – 83 Plus or TI-84 recommended.

DIGITAL RESOURCES
- We will be using two online accounts for this class. One will be the textbook with instructional activities and the other will be for assignments called Mathxl at We will be logging onto these sites in class during the first week and setting up username and password information.
- Progress Book is your 24/7 access to progress in this class. I update grades once a week, post homework assignments, announce tests, and give other important information to my classes through this program. User names and passwords are available through the graded level offices.
- My classroom website is on the Brunswick Schools webpage at use the drop box to select Brunswick High School, click teacher sites link at the top of the page.

COURSE POLICIES
1. Homework is not optional. Failure to do homework will affect your grade. Only complete assignments (every problem is attempted and work is shown when applicable) will earn full credit. 2 late homeworks will be accepted per quarter, for a reduced grade, until the day of the test over that unit. At the end of each quarter the homework percent will count as 10% of the total grade.
2. E-Texts will be used this year. Students will be given access codes and log in information for their e-text book during class. Note: Students will NOT be receiving a hard copy of their book. Homework will be assigned daily from the e-text and/ or Math XL. Students who may not have access to internet at home should speak to Mrs. Breuler to make arrangements at the beginning of the school year.
My Internet’s not working, how can I complete my homework?
1. BHS student center during or after school
2. Brunswick Public Library (open until 8:30pm most nights)
3. Math Lab during study halls
4. Get your homework done during free periods
5. Talk to Ms. Burris for other arrangements
Not having internet is not a valid excuse for not completing your homework. If you know this could impact you, please plan ahead!
3. Homework will be assigned daily including Fridays. You need to practice your newly acquired skills in mathematics. Graded cumulative reviews will be given on test days.
4. I reserve the right to give unannounced quizzes, so keep up with your work.
5. I am available for help during a common study hall and after school by appointment. Do not wait too long to set up a help session if you are having trouble.
6. It is your responsibility to make up work missed and hand in work that was checked while you were out. Assignments will be posted on Progress Book and can be found in mathxl or in the etext. Worksheets can be found in the Precalculus tray in the classroom or uploaded to the web. It is also your responsibility to get notes from a classmate for the days you are absent.
7. Each quarter there will be at least three tests. These will be announced and may occur any day of the week. These tests will be in the 90% portion of the quarter grade.
8. Make up of tests must be done the next day (for daily absences) or within the number of days of the absence for absences longer than one day. If you are present when the test is announced, but are absent the day before the test, you DO TAKE the test on the same day as the rest of the class. Make up tests will be done during a study hall or after school. Making up tests during the regular class period will be done only when it does not interfere with the instructional process.
9. Cheating in not acceptable. A score of 0 (zero) will be given to anyone who is caught cheating. Do not cheat and do not allow anyone to cheat from your paper.
10. A notebook is not optional in this class. I may spot check notebooks. All notebooks should contain the date, topic and text reference, definitions, diagrams, formulas, example problems, and the homework assignment. Notebooks may be done in pen. Diagrams may be done in colored pencils or colored pens to make them easier to understand.
11. Class participation is critical to success in this course. It is expected that students will participate in learning activities and will ask questions as they arise. Group participation requires all students to participate.
12. Brunswick High School Math Department Re-Testing Policy (Updated April 2012)
Students will be permitted to re-take two formative assessments per quarter in all level two classes. The criteria for a re-take will be that the student attempted all of the assignments for the content that is being assessed. It will be at the discretion of the teacher as to when re-takes will be allowed such as after school, during teacher study halls, or in class, but all re-takes must be completed in a single sitting and not spread over several periods. Students will not be allowed to complete the quizzes during a class period in which the teacher is responsible for instructing another class. Re-takes will need to be completed prior to the administration of the summative test for the unit. There will not be re-takes on summative tests or exams in any math class.
CLASSROOM RULES
- All school rules apply (dress code, tardy policy, etc.)
- Bring needed materials to class (pencil, paper, computer/eTextbook, calculator)
- Leave your work area as clean as you found it or cleaner.
- Be in your seat when the bell rings, ready to start class. Remain seated until you are dismissed.
- Use the restroom and stop at your locker before class. You might not have time to go to your locker between every class and asking to leave class should only be done for an emergency. You are to be in class for the full 50 minutes.
- Cell phones are to be stowed away and out of sight during class time.
GRADES
Grades will be assigned based on the following percentage scale:
100 - 97A+96.5 - 93A92.9 - 90A-
89.9 - 87B+86.9 – 83 B 82.9 - 80B-
79.9 - 77C+76.9 - 73C72.9 - 70C-
69.9 - 67D+66.9 - 63D62.9 - 60D-
How and where will we be using the graphing calculator in Pre-calculus with Trigonometry?
The graphing calculator will be used in a variety of ways in this course. Following are some of the ways it will be implemented.
- To graph and analyze functions including
- Linear
- Quadratic
- Exponential
- Logrithmic
- Radical
- Polynomial
- Inverse or rational
- To solve equations and systems of equations
- To analyze statistics, including making scatter plots and calculating a function of best fit for data
- To compare functions and choose an appropriate model
- To perform calculations with instruction in properly entering notation
- Solving advanced application problems including growth and decay, increasing area, and constant rate of change
