Continuum of Corrective Procedures
(Responses to Misbehavior)
Guidelines for administering corrective procedures:
- Immediate
- Specific – Specify the matrix behavior the student should be exhibiting
- Private/Quiet
- Calm – Body, hands, voice
- Quick – Make the correction, then move to another task
- Prompt – Provide a verbal and/or visual prompt to the student to help him/her participate or comply. Point to where he/she needs to go or show him/her a picture.
- Redirect – Restate the matrix behavior the student is supposed to exhibit.
- Reteach – State the matrix behavior and demonstrate the behavior. Have the student demonstrate.
- Provide Choice – The choices can address location, order of completion, tool, or activity.
The teacher can provide the choice to complete the task in another location.
The teacher can provide the choice of the order of task completion.
The teacher can provide the choice of a different type of writing instrument.
The teacher can provide the choice of a different type of activity that accomplishes the same instructional objective.
- Conference with the Student – “(Student’s name), you are having trouble being (state the matrix expectation.) How can we help you to be (state the matrix expectation)?
- Short-Term Removal from Activity/Time Away - Move to a new activity or move away from the group until the student is under control. The teacher could say, “(Student’s name), I see that you are upset. Please go sit (name a place) and calm down. When you are calm you can return to the group.”

Procedures for Completing Office Discipline Referrals
If a student has obtained 3 minors OR the student has committed a major offense follow the following procedure –
- Complete the following portions of the Office Discipline Referral Form:
- Student Name
- Student Grade
- Date
- Time of incident
- Referring Staff Member
- Location
- Problem Behavior
- Possible Motivation
- Short description of incident w/o mention of other student’s names
- Teacher Actions Taken Prior to Referral
**If student has received 3 minors, please staple the “3 Strikes” sheet to the Office Discipline Referral.
- Send student with referral in hand to office as soon as possible after incident.
- Administrator will determine consequence, send copy of referral home with child & give copy to referring staff member as well.
- Administrator will enter referral information into the SWIS.
- PBS Coaches will gather school data to create “Big 5 Reports” to present to staff & guide decision-making.
