Quote / Explanation
“…when she is holding you, holding you and you feel safe, is the warm smell of bread before you bake it, is the smell when she makes room for you on her side of the bed still warm with her skin, and you sleep near her…” (7) / This quote from the vignette “Hairs” shows child-like behavior because Esperanza still has the need and desire to be comforted by her mom. Children usually want to be comforted by their parents and snuggle with their parents, while adults usually comfort themselves. Here Esperanza acts more like a child than an adult.

Quote / My Connection
“But the truth is scary to look down at your foot that is no longer yours and see attached a long long leg” (40). / This quote from the vignette “The Family of Little Feet” shows that Esperanza and her friends are growing up because they see their legs in a new light. When they put on the heels, they no longer view their legs as little kids’ legs; they think they have long, attractive legs like grown up women. They think they are ready to attract men when they wear the high heel shoes.
