Poi Toa
Poi Toa is the umbrella term used for describing kemu (games) played while using a Poi. The following kemu are a few different variations.
Passing: Simple passing of the Poi between 2 - 4 people catching by the Aho (string/cord) or Ki (ball head).
Tag: Playing tag with a poi instead of tagging or using a ball.
Poi Bullrush: Similar to Bullrush but instead of getting the other team out by tackling or tagging you get them out by hitting them with the Poi.
Dodging Variations:
Piggy in the middle
· Between 3 and 5 players.
· The player in the middle has to dodge the Poi being thrown at them by people on either side.
· If the person in the middle catches the poi by the Aho (string/cord) without it touching the ground they change places with the thrower of that poi.
Gauntlet Dodge Ball
· Whole class.
· The aim of the game is last man standing.
· A few people as taggers spread out on either side (left and right) of a court/rectangular space. The rest (targets) start at the top side.
· The targets have to run the gauntlet from the top to the bottom of the court trying to avoid the thrown poi and then do it all over again.
· When a target gets hit they join the taggers trying to get rid of the remaining targets.
Bin Ball
· Whole class.
· Set up the bins at opposite ends of the court.
· Split the class into 2 even teams.
· To win the teams have to hit their bin in the oppositions half.
· Players that get hit (waist below) are out and line up courtside.
King Dodge Ball
· Whole class.
· The aim of the game is last team standing.
· Split the class into 2 even teams.
· Once the game starts the teams try to hit each other with thrown Poi.
· When a player gets hit (waist below) they’re ‘out’ and they cross to the keyhole in the opposition side. From there they can try to get the opposition out. If they do get someone out from the keyhole they can then be back “in”.
Other variations for Bin Ball and King Dodge Ball include:
o Making it full body to get someone out
o If a players poi is caught on the full they’re out.
o If a player catches a poi by the Aho (string/cord) they release 2-3players from their own team as well as get the thrower out.
