Full Professor of International Law, University of Trento (Italy). He currently teaches two courses: a general course of Public International Law and a course (in English) of Human Rights Protection in International and European Law at the Trento School of International Studies.

Deputy Prosecutor at the Juvenile Court in Milan (1972-1975); Judge (Civil and Criminal) at the Tribunal of Milan (1975-1983);

Associate Professor of Int.l Law at the Univ. of Urbino Law School (1983-1986);

Associate, then Full Professor of Int.l Law at the Univ. of Trento Law School (since 1986);

Legal Adviser to the Permanent Mission of Italy to the UN, New York (1992-2001);

Member of the Italian Delegation to the Rome Conf. for the establishment of the ICC (1998);

Chairman of the 6th (Legal) Committee of the UN General Assembly (2000-2001);

Judge of the International Criminal Court (2003-2009); Presiding Judge of the Pre-Trial II of the ICC (2006-2009);

At the Rome Conference on the establishment of the ICC, he was Coordinator on the issue of children in armed conflicts;

During his mandate as a Judge of the ICC, he was dealing with the situations in Uganda and Central African Republic;

With regard to the situation in Uganda, he acted as a Single Judge on victims issues.
