The Dirty Dozen Brass Band
A cherished institution of the South, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band also travel the world bringing their R&B, jazz, trademark high-spirited style funk, Afro-Latino and gospel favorites to delighted music lovers everywhere. With 40 years of making music, the Dirty Dozen are now a world famous music machine that finds the funk regardless of which genre they decide to delve into. In a nutshell - festive and infectiously groovy! The Band will also offer a jazz music workshop. Friday October 14, 2016.

Hot Club of San Francisco - Cinema Vivant
America’s longest lasting, most swinging and daring gypsy jazz ensemble. This innovative program features a selection of vintage silent films - two stop action animation pioneer Ladislaw Starewicz films - The Cameraman's Revenge, a charming piece about the marital troubles of beetles and The Mascot, an adventure story about lost toys. American Charley Bowers 1920’s movie There It Is combines animation with live action in a whimsical comedy about a mysterious occurrence investigated by Scotland Yard. The band plays on the side of the stage as the movies roll. Friday March 3, 2017.

Storm Large with Le Bonheur
An astonishing artist, Storm Large sings with Pink Martini – Storm is also an actor and songwriter and has her own band. With “Le Bonheur” she is a genuine spellbinding rock-star, performing classic covers in new ways as well as her own songs. Her program is suitable for older teen audiences and over (R-rated language) and while being a wild ride it is also deeply affecting and powerful …even triumphant. Thursday March 9, 2017.

Julian Lage and Chris Eldridge, with Aoife O’Donovan
Jazz, bluegrass and spontaneity! Lage and Eldridge are both young, yet undoubted masters of the acoustic guitar. Eldridge is a member of the brainy, hot-shot string band Punch Brothers, while Lage is a pantheist, known mostly for playing several kinds of jazz. They will bring young Irish singer Aoife O’Donovan with them on this tour. They both play flattop, Martins guitars, and the New Yorker describes their stage partnership as “cerebral, and sometimes playful, but, because their vocabulary is so expansive, it is also riveting.” The three will also present a Kahilu Season Youth Show. DANCE
Ballet Folklorico Costa de Oro
A community Ballet Folklorico from San Lorenzo, CA, on a special trip to Hawaii that coincides with our Season Opening in September. Beautifully costumed and choreographed, these traditional Mexican folk dances are theatrically presented. The company includes dancers from the adult ensemble who trained in Mexico, as well as the infantil and juvenil group. They will present a Kahilu Season Youth Show and also join the Paniolo Parade through town. Friday September 15, 2016

Okinawa Prefectural University of Arts
Faculty and top students from the Okinawa Prefectural University of Arts in Naha will present a program of dance and music, consisting of folk dance and music, such as “datuda” female and mask dances from Kohama island, karate, contemporary folk dance and a lion dance with male dancers. Classical dance will balance the program: female dance, male dance, song with sansin, dances originated from folk dances and a part of Kumiodori, which is a form of traditional narrative Ryukyuan dance and drama. A collaboration with the East West Center, on Friday September 23, 2016.

Christopher Morgan – Pohaku
Christopher Morgan is a highly acclaimed Hawaiian contemporary choreographer. Working out of Washington, DC, Morgan’s new show is a rare blend of hula and contemporary dance theatre, with live musicians on stage. Christopher Morgan will also present a Kahilu Season Youth Show and undertake a school visit in Waimea. Sunday October 23, 2016.

Ragamala Dance – They Rose at Dawn
Contemporary dance, incorporating Baratanatyam traditional movement, with a live Carnatic music ensemble on stage. The New York Times described dancer and Artistic Director Aparna Ramaswany as “…a vision of sculptural lucidity whose dancing brings a full-bodied awareness to complex rhythms and shifts of dynamics. All the while, the strength of her purity is second nature ― both explicit and seemingly casual.” Ragamala will also dance for a Kahilu Season Youth Show. Monday March 13, 2017.

Herve Koubi
French-Algerian choreographer Hervé Koubi is being recognized as one of Europe’s most distinctive choreographers. He will make his Hawaii debut with a highly physical, stunningly fluid work for 12 French-Algerian and African male dancers that combines capoeira, martial arts, urban and contemporary dance with powerful imagery evocative of Orientalist paintings and the stone filigree of Islamic architecture. The company will also offer a Dance Masterclass. Saturday April 1, 2017.

A series of seven concerts featuring our beloved new Steinway 9’ Grand. Martha Redbone – The Bone Hill Project
Martha Redbone is a mesmerizing Native American performer, writer, and storyteller. Her new work “Bone Hill” is a uniquely American story of family and dreams – an unforgettable journey of neo-soul and blues, combining her Choktaw, Cherokee and African American roots. Martha Redbone and her band will be in residence for three days and will present a full Kahilu Season Youth Show as well as make visits to community groups. Saturday October 29, 2016.

Modern Maori Quartet
Maaka Pohatu and his bandmates, Matariki Whatarau, James Tito and Matu Ngaropo, are all trained actors who got together to make their own show flaunting their fantastic singing voices. The quartet has its roots in the popular Maori showbands of the ‘50s and ‘60s. Sharp suits, skinny ties, brill cream – check. Their jazzed up kapa haka slips into a perfect barbershop mix of modern day and classic songs in Te Reo Maori and English - the Modern Maori Quartet radiate good times! The boys will be in residence at Kahilu Theatre for a few days visiting senior centers and other community groups. Wednesday November 9, 2016.

The Black Arm Band – Dirtsong
The Black Arm Band is an Aboriginal Australian and Torres Strait Islander musical group that is original, uplifting, and ethereal. A “Sweet Honey in the Rock”-style female vocalist line up is backed by musicians wielding saxophone, didgeridoo, two percussions, and four local musicians joining them. Large-scale visual projections help transport the audience into the heart of the oldest living cultures on the earth. The Black Arm Band will also present a Kahilu Season Youth Show. Maisey Rika with Horomona Horo
Maisey returns to Kahilu, this time with Horomona Horo – a young and impressive Maori chanter and multi-instrumentalist. Whakatane-born Maisey’s signature acoustic-based sound and compelling vocals are at times haunting, revealing a genuine sense of melody and heartfelt meaning. One of the most beautiful and arresting voices to have emerged from New Zealand, ever. Maisey and Horomona will also present a Kahilu Season Youth Show and visit schools in the region. Dobet Gnahoré
Dobet Gnahoré is a singer, songwriter, dancer and percussionist, from the Cote D’Ivoire or Ivory Coast, who settled in Marseilles in 1991 due to the Civil War. Her father Boni is a percussionist who performs with her. She was a nominee at the 2006 World Music Awards for Newcomer and shared an award for Best Urban/Alternative Performance with India Arie at the 52nd Grammy Awards. The Ivory Coast is a West African state best known for reggae and hip-hop, but she has developed a pan-African approach in which local influences are mixed with styles, and languages from across the continent. She is truly dynamic on stage. Saturday February 25, 2017.

Wonderheads – Loon
Mask performance storytelling for families. A Christmas Carol
A Community Musical directed by Rhonda Simon, musical director Mallory diBartolo - both teachers with Kahilu’s SmART Academy - and guest choreographer. Music by Alan Menken, Lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, based on the story by Charles Dickens - Ebeneezer Scrooge and his ghostly encounters come to life in this lavish and thrilling Broadway adaptation, which has recently proved its staying power with a decade long run at Madison Square Garden. Back to Broadway II Concert
A Broadway review featuring hits from the best-loved Broadway musicals, performed with high energy and high quality singing and performing. Our Kahilu Youth Troupe will be augmented by some alumni of Kahilu produced shows; “Godspell”, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee”, “Broadway in Hawaii” and “Back to Broadway”. Prince Dance Institute - BEES
A Showcase performance by the over one hundred students learning contemporary dance, ballet, hula, hip hop, breakdancing and aerial trapeze, directed by Angel Prince.
Bees (working title) is a new production - a multi-media dance show that examines the life and plight of bees, the students will perform styles ranging from contemporary dance to break dancing. Artistic Director Angel Prince will collaborate with art star and beekeeper Garnett Puett to create this artistic and educational show based on a topic that is both relevant and urgent for everyone human on the planet. 13 the Musical
Using our younger actors and singers – this musical will showcase our 12-16 year old students – the upcoming Kahilu Youth Troupe. “13 The Musical” is all about fitting in and standing out. It’s a high energy, grown-up story about growing up, featuring the only all-teenage cast ever to hit Broadway – the first run was in 2008. With wit and searing honesty, “13” maneuvers the minefield of starting High School and “fitting in”. Featuring an explosive rock score by Tony Award winning composer Jason Robert Brown (Parade, The Last Five Years), and directed by Beth Dunnington. Three shows Friday June 16 to Sunday June 18, 2017.

HAWAIIAN – Music and Hula
Kanakaole ’Ohana – Hālau O Kakuhi
Committed to the Kahilu Season opening, which will be tied into the Kapa Exhibit that is planned to run September 15 to November 4. The hālau will dance in kapa costumes. Hālau O Kekuhi is celebrated for its mastery of the ‘aiha‘a style of hula (dance) and oli (chant). The ‘aiha‘a is a low-postured, vigorous, bombastic style of hula that springs from the eruptive volcano persona Pele and Hi‘iaka, characteristic of Hawai‘i Island’s creative forces.
Hālau o Kekuhi has earned local, state, national, and international recognition for their art.
The leadership of the dance company is transmitted through matrilineal succession and with the passing of Edith Kanaka‘ole, her daughters Pualani Kanaka‘ole Kanahele and Nālani Kanaka‘ole assumed the role of kumu hula. In 2007, Pualani relinquished her position to her daughters, Kekuhi Keali‘ikanaka‘oleohaililani and Huihui Kanahele-Mossman, who, along with Nālani, are now the kumu hula of the hālau. Currently, the hālau is under the direction of Nālani and Huihui. Saturday September 19, 2016.

Waimea Slack Key and Ukulele Festival
This year we will celebrate the “Pahinui Sound” with Martin Pahinui, Cyril Pahinui and Kunia Galdeira - and we will acknowledge the importance of “Dancing Cat Records”, that promoted slack key music to the word in the ‘70s and ‘80s. We will invite George Winston and Ry Cooder to be guests at the institute, and we will seek Jake Shimabukuro to headline our ‘ukulele contingent. Jeff Peterson, Benny Chong, Led Kaapana, Mike Kaawa, Kawika Kahiapo will also be invited. Our featured guest band will be Kaiholu - four nahenahe Hawaiian gentlemen, winners of Ka Himeni ‘Ana, and dedicated to making nahenahe Hawaiian music. Trax Enos, Al Rowland, Jr., Hanale Ka'anapu and Nathaniel Mahealani Stillman are masters of the close harmony Hawaiian sound, with the classic lineup of upright bass, two guitars, and ukulele.
