AIMS OF THE HONOURS PROGRAMME
To provide an earlier and more concentrated attention to the study of English literature than is usual in the Majors programme for students who show both a special interest in and aptitude for this study, and to create a community of such students.
To provide more opportunities for independent study, for tutorial teaching, and for seminar work for such students.
To ensure that such students make a preliminary study of the writers who have decisively influenced the tradition of English literature, and that the students begin to have some coherent view of the tradition.
To develop more intensively the student's skill in reading, writing, and criticism. To offer some preparation, by way of an elementary introduction to scholarly procedures, for advanced work in literary study.
To ensure that all Honours students have made some systematic study of the English language.
PREREQUISITES: An overall high second-class standing in the 2nd year and a first or a high second class standing in English.
For further information, see the English Courses Offered webpage located at the UBC Department of English website: or speak to the Chair, Dr. Elizabeth Hodgson, or any member of the Honours Committee.
