Ugitech at wire 2018

Excellent machinability despite high cutting speeds

The performance of today's CNC machines can hardly be compared to the models in standard use ten years ago. Yet as cutting speeds are stepped up, the demands placed on the material also increase, more precisely, on steel. This is where Ugitech, a company of the SCHMOLZ+BICKENBACH Group, comes into the picture. The steel grades produced by the French company Ugitech reveal their strengths best under high loads. Experts at wire 2018 at stand A71 in hall 13 explain which technologies and measures Ugitech uses to guarantee this level of performance.

One focus at wire in the stainless steel segment will be on the development of the New Generation of UGIMA®. The machinability of this special steel is excellent, a quality that Ugitech has engineered to meet the requirements of state-of-the-art CNC machines. It is at high cutting speeds that the benefits of uniformly reproducible inclusions in the steel are apparent since tool wear is extremely low. Moreover, the material is also used to produce stainless bar steel with a high degree of straightness. The Next Generation of UGIMA® steels will beavailable as turned and drawn steel bar.

Presentation of the new UGIMA®-X series

The basis for the excellent quality of machined Ugitech steel grades are UGIMA® oxides which are induced in the material as minute particles that deform at high temperatures. The Ugitech smelting plant has developed a special process that guarantees better reproducibility of the composition of oxides. This new process will also be showcased at wire. Ugitech, a subsidiary of the SCHMOLZ+BICKENBACH Group sellsthese steels under the product name UGIMA®-X. In order to be able to machine steel at high speed and optimally utilize the advantages of UGIMA®-X oxides, Ugitech also will provide very straight rods under the label UGIMA®-XD.

Ugitech looks deep inside steel grades

Ugitech will also explain their latest analysis method that uses transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In TEM, an electron beam is directed through a (usually ultra-thin) specimen of a given grade of steel. Ugitech is one of the few producers of stainless steel long products to use TEM to analyze the microstructure of materials in the sub-micron range. The specimen is generally less than 100 nanometers thick. Transmission electron microscopes reveal particles and structures that are a thousand times smaller than an object viewed under a light-optical microscope. Ugitech uses the new system for research work as well as for expert studies.

At the stand Ugitech will also explain the functioning of their new 3-point press. The press is an automatic mechanism that takes up one bar and then scans it in three dimensions. Using this process, Ugitech can identify accurate to the millimeter precisely what points of the bar are not perfectly straight. If any deviations in straightness are detected, the system analyzes at which three points on the bar pressure needs to be applied to perfect its straightness.
