Sister Cities Association of Saranac Lake
c/o The Left Bank Café
36 Broadway, Saranac Lake
In 1989, Kenneth Weissberg, a long time summer visitor to the Adirondacks and then Mayor Bill Madden created the official “twinning” of two rural towns-- Saranac Lake, NY & Entrains, France through “Sister Cities International” and in the years that followed groups have been warmly welcomed on both sides of the Atlantic. In 2000 St Agathe, Quebec became Saranac Lake’s Canadian Sister City. This local chapter strives to uphold the overall mission of the Sister Cities International,
“... to encourage the people of the world to learn, through sister relationships and programs, about the traditions, history, way of life, and ideals of the United States of America, and to assist the American people in a similar manner, utilizing exchanges of people, information and activities in all aspects of contemporary life.”
From 1994-2004 Paul Smith’s College students experienced French culture and cuisine as participants in a culinary internship program that was centered in Entrains at the “Maison des Adirondacks.” Since 2012 The Left Bank Café at 36 Broadway has been the “headquarters” for the Saranac Lake Sister Cities chapter where members enjoy regional French suppers, wine tastings, cooking classes and celebrations of the French holidays.French students from Saranac Lake High School and Paul Smith’s College are honorary members and have enjoyed practicing their language skills and learning about French and Canadian traditions at Sister Cities events.
