Welcome

The purpose of this handbook is to better acquaint students, parents and teachers of the academic, extra-curricular, and discipline policies of RushSpringsHigh School. Through this information we hope to unify and work together to make the school year rewarding and beneficial to the student. Many of the problems that arise in our school may be eliminated by knowledge and understanding of the information in this handbook.

It is the desire of the administration and your teachers that you will use this handbook to become well informed about your school and its regulations and be challenged to live up to the standards of RushSpringsHigh School.

We are proud of RushSpringsHigh School and its traditions. We want all students to feel that the school belongs to you and you belong to the school. As a student of Rush Springs High, take pride in yourself and your school. As years go by, we believe that you will look back on your high school years as some of the happiest days of your life.

Special Notice to Parents…

Student/Parent Internet Access

To Grades/Attendance

We are glad to announce that the Rush Springs School District will continue to provide a web site for students and parents to access student’s grades and attendance records as has been done for the past few years. You and your child will receive a new ID and password sometime during the first few weeks of school. Once the new system is working, it will be the responsibility of the parent/guardian to access the site on a regular basis (weekly is suggested)in order to obtain your child’s grades and absences/tardies report. MAS will be the primary means of communications to inform parents/guardians about their child’s performance. Individuals without internet access are invited to come to the Rush Springs High School Library. School personnel will be present to assist you. The Rush Springs Public Library is also available. The parent/guardian might simply instruct the child to bring home a printout of the report.

Computer Usage

RushSpringsSchool believes that our computers and their usage are a valuable resource for students to use for their education. We want our students to get full usage of the computer and the Internet for homework assignments and reports. Therefore, school computers shall only be used for educational purposes only. Chatting, e-mailing, improper Internet sites, and any other use of the computers in a non-educational manner, shall result in proper punishment and possible banishment in the use of the school computers.

FERPA POLICY

Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), a copy of any and all of student’s records shall be made available to parents or legal guardians no more than fifteen days after filing an official request for such information. Student’s records will be sent to the legal guardians. Under FERPA law, release of student records may go to the student when they reach the age of 18.

This is a release of school records to parents after a student reaches 18 years of age.

Absence/Tardy Policy

______We have thoroughly read the absence and tardy policies of RushSpringsHigh School. I understand it is my responsibility as a parent to have my child at school and on time each day. Only emergency absences as approved by the principal, are not subject to the ten-day absence limit per semester. Students who are absent for more than10 days in a particular hour, shall receive NO credit for that class.

Authorization for Medical Care**

I give permission for the school personnel to administer emergency medical care to my child as stated below:

  1. Standard first aid procedures
  2. Administration of non-aspirin pain relievers
  3. Administration of prescription medicines pursuant to the handbook. (Any prescription medicine brought to school by the student will need to be turned in to the office for proper administration.
  4. In the event that a student needs professional medical attention, and the parent/guardian cannot be reached, the school personnel may authorize the EMS to assist the student as needed or school personnel may transport the child to the nearest appropriate medical facility.

For seniors only:

A senior that fails a class due to being absent more than 10 days, unless approved by the attendance committee, will not be allowed to participate in graduation exercises. The student will receive their diploma if they meet requirements, but will not walk across the stage.

Student Information Permission

At various times the school may furnish to the newspaper, radio/television, sports, various organizations or individuals the names, addresses, telephone numbers, images, achievements, etc. of a student and/or their parents of the Rush Springs School System. Reasons for providing this information might include but is not limited to yearbook, news articles, schoolweb page, student directories, transcripts, college recruiters, arm forces, etc. By signing below, you give the school permission to do this.

MAS/Internet Grading/Attendance Program

It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian/student to access the internet on a regular basis (weekly is suggested) in order to obtain you child’s grades and absences/tardies reports. Students are generally are told in advance of all trips/outings and it is their responsibility to keep parents informed of all activities. There may also be events that become available for your child to be a part in which little or no prior notice may be given. Students should know doctor appointments, dentist appointments, etc. and therefore not participate in an activity that would create a conflict.

Statement of Purpose and Intent

Participation in school sponsored extra-curricular activities and driving to/from school at the RushSpringsSchool District is a privilege. Activity students carry a responsibility to themselves, their fellow students, their parents, and their school to set the highest possible examples of conduct, which includes avoiding the use or possession of illegal drugs.

Drug use of any kind is incompatible with participation in extra-curricular activities on behalf of the RushSpringsPublicSchool District. Furthermore, the district wishes to make available to students who do not participate in extra-curricular activities equal opportunities for testing. For the safety, health, and well being of the students of the district, the RushSpringsPublicSchool District has adopted the attached Student Drug Testing Policy and the Student Drug Testing Consent for use by all participating students in grades 6-12.

Students Participating in Extra-Curricular Activities

Each Activity Student or Student Driver shall be provided with a copy of the Student Drug Testing Policy and Student Drug Testing Consent which shall be read, signed, and dated by the student, parent or custodial guardian, and coach/sponsor before such student shall be eligible to practice or participate in any interscholastic activities. The consent shall be to provide a sample: a) as part of their annual physical or for eligibility for participation; b) as chosen by the random selection basis; and c) at any time requested based on reasonable suspicion to be tested for illegal or performance-enhancing drugs. No student shall be allowed to practice or participate in any activity governed by the policy unless the student has returned the properly signed Student Drug Testing Consent.

Students Not Participating in Extra-Curricular Activities

Each student shall be provided with a copy of the Student Drug Testing Policy and Student Drug Testing Consent which shall be read, signed, and dated by the student and parent or custodial guardian. The consent shall be to provide a sample: a) as chosen by the random selection basis; and b) at any time requested based on reasonable suspicion to be tested for illegal or performance-enhancing drugs. Results will be confidential and will be shared only with the parents and/or custodial guardian. No punitive action will be taken as a result of a positive test when done in conjunction with this policy. Parents will be encouraged to take advantage of the counseling provisions of this policy.

There is a one-minute warning bell preceding each tardy bell.

  1. Graduation Requirements:

Students graduation from Rush Springs Schools must have 24 units in order to graduate. Students must complete the following credits to meet their graduation requirements:

(4) LANGUAGE ARTS – 1 per year

(3) MATHEMATICS – Algebra I & then (2) upper level maths

(3) SCIENCES – Biology & (2) other science courses. (Some qualified agricultural courses may be substituted if rigor is above biology.)

(4) SOCIAL STUDIES – ½ Oklahoma History, ½ to 1 US Government, 1 US History, 1½ to 2 other social studies. Students moving to Oklahoma from another state and enrolling in high school may graduate without Oklahoma History if it cannot be scheduled. Students attending Career Tech may be allowed to have only 3 units of social studies if approved by administration. All students must take US History II, no exceptions.

(1) ARTS – May include but not limited to Visual Arts, General Music, Band

(2)COMPUTERS OR (2) FOREIGN LANGUAGES– If foreign languages are chosen, students will still need to complete one computer (which can count as an elective.)

(1)PERSONAL FINANCE-Required for all students entering high school starting in 10-11.

(6-7) ELECTIVES – Courses may vary.

PORTFOLIO-A compilation of work, plans, awards, applications, reports, etc., which will be compiled into a notebook representing each academic school year beginning with the 2010-2011 school year.

Please note that every student will need at least one computer credit.

  1. COURSES TAKEN PER SCHOOL YEAR (there may be some exceptions):

9TH GRADE – English I, Algebra I, Physical Science, social study class (varies), (2-3) electives

10th GRADE – English II, Algebra II, Biology, social study class (varies) & (3)

electives

11th GRADE – American Literature, Geometry, (1) Advanced Science, social study class (American History II if not already completed), (3) electives

12th GRADE – English Literature, any other required course not taken in an earlier year and

electives to fulfill graduation requirements. The Portfolio will be due near the end the senior year.

Due to scheduling conflicts and/or student educational needs, schedules may be varied for some students if granted by administration.

  1. CLASS LOAD:

All students are expected to enroll in a full schedule. Students will be required to take a minimum of 7 classes per semester. **The only exceptions to this rule are students enrolled concurrently, attending OSSM classes, Career Tech, virtual classes, or seniors who are on a work release programor an office assistant.(ADMINISTRATION APPROVAL)

  1. CHANGE OF SCHEDULE:

Students desiring to drop a course or to make changes in their schedule must make an appointment with administration to get approved. A cut-off date within the first 3 days of the semester will be established where no more schedule changes can be made except by a request of a teacher or for reason’s deemed appropriate/necessary by the principal. (ADMINISTRATION APPROVAL ALWAYS REQUIRED)
