  1. Briefly describe the motivation for starting this group.

Ours is a premier organization in the field of disability management. Our focus is on rural areas. Our approach is to establish a centralized resource center and act as a Catalyst to change and promote development in the Physically and Mentally challenged sector by involving the village community in the process. The organization is founded and run by Physically challenged persons who have built a good -team and infrastructure and are delivering quality and value added services at local, regional and national spectrums.

  1. Briefly describe the short term and long terms aims/goals of the group.

Amar Seva Sangam is to empower the disabled citizens by establishing a "Valley for the Disabled" as a Rehabilitation and Development Centre for the region and developing models for self-help initiatives by integrating the disabled individuals with the society for improved living conditions in the village.

our Aims:

1.To involve the local communities in the decision making process

2.To enable persons with disabilities to become independent and assertive

3.To extend the current physical rehabilitation programme to social and economical integration.

4.To establish democratic people-level institutions for proper utilization of the infrastructure created in the Sangam and make it a “Valley for the Disabled”

1. A Home for the polio affected poor children with accommodation, food, clothing, medical care, appliances and education, all free.

2.Day-Care Centre for 65 Special Children to train them self-care in hygienic activities and basic literacy. The parents are also trained as to how to treat their wards once they are discharged.

3.Caliper Making Unit to make calipers and mobility aids available to the needy free of cost and also free maintenance.

4.Medical Testing Unit - We have a fully equipped medical testing unit to evaluate persons with disability, offer physiotherapy services including training of students. Wherever corrective surgeries are necessary, it is done by specialized hospitals followed by further care-giving and provision of appliances.

5.Post-Acute Care Centre for the Spinal Injured was inaugurated in 2008; has at present 12 patients undergoing rehabilitation and medical intervention.

Disabled youths are given short course training which enables them to lead a humble livelihood.

Separate hostel facility for 125 disabled youth (boys & girls) trainees is available

Village Based Rehabilitation (VBR) Initiatives

1. Creating awareness about disability, its causes and management by street campaigns, plays and other means of communication.

2. Prevention, early intervention, care-giving and rehabilitation those affected.

3. Formation of Self-Help Groups of the physically challenged, training them in vocational skills to make them earn their living.

4. Forming Respite Centers in villages for day-care and to train the physically challenged when their parents are away for earning their livelihood.

The endeavours of Amar Seva Sangam have been recognized by many quarters. Notable among them are – Bhatia Award 1994, The National Award 2002, Tamilnadu State Award 2004, Helen Keller Award 2005, National Award for Child Welfare-2005 and One of the CNN Heroes out of 18 Awardees -2007, and 12th Mahaveer Award-2005 for the Social and Community Welfare
