PROFESSIONAL POSITION DESCRIPTION

STATEMENT OF THE JOB: The director is the chief academic and administrative officer of the School of Music. S/he is responsible for providing leadership for the School’s instructional programs, implementing its artistic and educational objectives, and working effectively with faculty, staff and students. The Director’s responsibilities include advocating for the School of Music within the University and in the broader community; securing new resources to support the School’s mission; and enhancing and maintaining a supportive, open and civil environment for the faculty, staff, and students. The director's responsibilities may be summarized under five headings: leadership, advancement, faculty development, supervision of staff and administration of budget, and advocacy for the School of Music.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Leadership:
- Is responsible for the development, review, and evaluation of short- and long- term goals, programs, and curriculum for the School within the framework of the mission of the School and the overall mission of the University.
- Is responsible for maintaining liaison with national accrediting agencies and meeting report requirements and accreditation standards for the programs in the School.
- Is responsible for working with the Office of Admissions and leading the faculty's endeavors to attract and retain students in the School.
- Is responsible for the administration of academic matters including class scheduling, registration assistance, certification for graduation, student advisory systems, faculty orientation, and information for academic publication.
Advancement:
- Initiates and leads the development activities of the School, seeking outside sources of funding and representing the School in the development program of the University.
- Coordinates directly with the Vice President for Advancement and senior advancement staff.
Faculty Development:
- Recommends to the Dean personnel actions related to hiring, salary, retention, tenure, promotion, and dismissal of all faculty who hold full-time appointments within the School.
- Recommends to the Dean personnel actions related to hiring, salary, retention, and dismissal of all faculty who hold part-time appointments within the School.
- Supervises the adjunct artist faculty, including hiring, evaluation, and dismissal.
- Encourages and supports faculty development in appropriate scholarly/creative activity, teaching, and service.
Advocacy:
- Is responsible for maintaining an effective liaison between the School and the community and serves ex-officio on the School’s Advisory Council.
- Is responsible for the administration of programs of public service that serve the needs of the community and of the University, including the Youth Ensemble program.
- Participates in and represents the School and University in professional activities and ceremonial functions outside of and within the University.
The director of the School of Music also:
- Performs other duties as agreed upon by the director, the dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, and the faculty of the School of Music.
- May teach as appropriate.
SPECIAL ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES*:
- Responsibility to regularly handle cash or cash equivalents as pertains to the SOM budget.
- Master key or swipe card access, to Corthell Hall.
- Ability to provide own transportation (fully-insured vehicle), provide proof of a valid driver’s license, and compliance with Maine law regarding vehicle insurance.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsible for the supervision of the School’s professional and classified staff, including the Coordinator of Music Development, the Arts Promotions Director, the Arts Events Director/Concert Manager, and the Coordinator of Youth Ensembles. This includes hiring, evaluation, and dismissal of professional and classified staff in the School.
BUDGET RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsible for the preparation, submission, disbursement of, and working within the School’s and Youth Ensemble’s budgets and for making efficient and effective use of all School resources.
PUBLIC AND PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES RELATED TO JOB PERFORMANCE:
INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CONTACTS:
Internal: Dean, department chairs, faculty, staff, students, all administrative offices, Portland youth ensembles
External: SOM Advisory Board, Maine public and private schools, area performing arts organizations (Portland Symphony Orchestra, Portland Ovations, Snow Pond, Bay Chamber Concerts, Boys and Girls Clubs, etc.)
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Significant scholarly/musical achievement
- Demonstrated skills in fundraising and development
- Outstanding administrative, leadership, and communication skills
- Record of successful university teaching
- Consensus building skills
- Budgetary experience
QUALIFICATIONS:
Earned doctorate or terminal degree in music preferred; other credentials considered
