Role of Intern
This experiential learning opportunity is an immersion into the Kentucky General Assembly and state government process during a General Assembly session. Students are matched with a legislator and engage in every aspect of that legislator's agenda on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00am to 4:00pm throughout the legislative session, beginning the first week of January 2017 (exact date and time to be determined in early December). Students will need to allow ample time for travel to Frankfort. A van will travel to Frankfort each morning from NKU. Students are not required to utilize the van for transportation, but their timely arrival is expected. The van will depart at 6:30am each morning. The session will run to the end of March. The exact date that the session will conclude depends on the completion of 60 days in session. Inclement weather and other circumstances may extend the length of the session. Students must serve as interns for the entire session and should block of Tuesdays and Thursdays from the first of January through the spring semester.
Students will learn legislative tracking, constituent services management, and legislative processes during their experience. They are encouraged to engage with the various leaders of business, government and non-profit entities who are part of the process during the session. FLIP Coordinator Ryan Salzman will administer the academic requirements of the course including assignments and presentations. A syllabus will provide a detailed account of the assignments for the semester and the submission process. In total, the experiences and assignments will provide a robust learning opportunity.
