Introduction:
Listed above are the textbooks for the sixth grade language arts courses. Your child will be using a variety of resources for instruction. These are classroom sets and they will remain in the class unless arrangements have been made by the teacher. Our textbooks may also be accessed online. Your child will receive a password in September so he/she may log on at home to work. Sixth grade students are not required by the state to complete a formal writing portfolio; however, sixth graders will be compiling a “working” portfolio of writing samples as well as common state-wide assessment.
Daily Required Materials:
Your child will be required to bring paper and pencil to every class. It is suggested that you purchase a three-ring binder with dividers and pockets to hold worksheets and handouts. Your child will also be given an agenda the first day of school. This is to be used as an organizational tool and each student is expected to record assignments and important due dates in their agenda for every class. Parents can check the agenda daily to see their child’s assignments, as well as correspond with the teachers.
Common Assessment Points:
Students will be assessed at various points during the school year. These assessments will include reading comprehension, basic grammar skills and common state assessments. Open responses, on-demand practice, accelerated reader, and daily assignments will complete the student’s grade.
Grading Scale:
90-100 = A
80-89 = B
70-79 = C
60-69 = D
59 and below = F
Accelerated Reader Requirements:
Each student will be required to read and test on three (3) Accelerated Reader books per nine weeks. Books must be of a reading level no lower than the student’s personal reading level as assessed by the MAPS scores (administered at the beginning of the school year). First AR test is due August 25th, second test is due September 8th, and the third test is September 22nd.
