Communications and Public Relations

Hours/Schedule of Position: This full-time salaried exempt employee reports directly to the Executive Director. Standard hours are Monday through Friday with evening or weekend activities and travel as required by events.

Summary of Position Purpose: Promote the sport of tennis, USTA, and its programs to members of the organization and to the general population of SC through communication and public relation strategies to attract significant numbers of new players and participants into USTA services, while also engaging and retaining current members/participants.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education/Certification: Bachelor degree in relevant field
  • Experience:Internship or past employment with comparable duties, non-profit background, practical knowledge and work with themedia and volunteers
  • Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication, ability to create engaging written content, proficient in Microsoft Office and Adobe CS 5, competency with digital SLR photography
  • Other Requirements: Familiarity with tennis, a positive attitude with a passion for customer service, pride in one’s work and a self-starter with a desire to be on our team and grow the association in-line with our strategic mission.

Position Responsibilities Include:

  1. Develop and maintain local media relationships around the state as a network to disseminate news and feature stories to the media on a frequent and regular basis. Field media inquiries with Executive Director input and prepare news releases.
  1. Connect with local tennis providers to be informed of events and happenings and assist with public relations and promotion for mutual benefit.
  1. Manage communication with USTA South Carolina members through e-blasts and on-hold voice messaging.
  1. Implement and disseminate materials from USTA National and Section marketing campaigns and when applicable in conjunction with the marketing and league promotions position.
  1. Manage USTA SC public relations, including photography at state-wide events which place USTA SC in the public consciousness, such as festivals, league championships and special events.
  1. Manage website content management system for the design and maintenance of USTA South Carolina website and social media to include the timely posting of news articles, special event pages, and policies, regulations and official documents of USTA South Carolina for public viewing. Maintain an active and innovative presence on social media platforms.
  1. Train and support CTAs using the USTA network website template. Offer consultation and guidance within knowledge base to any South Carolina CTA regarding websites or social media.
  1. Grow revenues from website ad sales and support accounts.
  1. Manage approved budget income and expenses related to communications and public relations.
  2. Manage computer and audio/visual equipment not specifically assigned to individual staff. Maintain this equipment and administer an assignment/checkout system for this equipment. Assist committees & staff with audiovisualsupport, including the USTA SouthCarolina Annual Meeting, workshops and public events.
  1. Act as staff liaison with Chairperson(s) of USTA South Carolina committee(s) as assigned by Executive Director to include regular communication and contact with information, suggestions and offers to support committee goals.
  1. From time to time, assist other staff with projects, including work for the Executive Director as needed.
