What is a Better Start?

Fulfilling Lives: A Better Start is a Big Lottery initiative that aims to deliver a step change in the use of preventative approaches for babies and children from pregnancy to three years of age.Awards are available between £30million to £50 Million for up to 10 years in a specific geographic area of between 30,000 and 70,000 people where there is evidence of need.

What is Big Lottery looking for?

  • Outcomes of the initiative are in three main areas of child development: language development;
  • social and emotional development; and
  • nutrition.

Key Features of the initiative:

  • To run a variety of programmes and initiatives to aid the key areas that will affect a child’s life and prevent harm, specifically: social and emotional development; language development; diet and nutrition
  • ensure primary prevention is at the heart of service delivery
  • take a ‘whole-family’ approach to ‘get it right first time’
  • ensure systems are responsive to changing needs and maximise uptake from those that need it most.

Selecting a lead Voluntary Organisation Applicant

The Lead VCS organisationshould have experience of working in early years and an understanding of the needs and existing service provision of the geographical area covered by the two wards of Lozells and East Handsworth & Soho.

Lozells and East Handsworth & Soho Wardshas been selected based on an assessment which has been undertaken against the Lottery criteria (this includes population between 30,000 and 70,000; evidence of deprivation; four indicators of need: child poverty, low birth weight, Child Development at age 5, Obese Children:Year 6). Birmingham has also included child protection as an additional indicator to provide a more targeted preventative approach.

Participating in the Partnership

As part of the EOI to Big Lottery we are required to identify local organisations and agencies that will play a significant role in partnership on the project. If you are interested in becoming involved in the partnership please complete section B of the EOI.

What happens next?

  • The Big Lottery Action Group selection panel (chaired by Jackie Mould, Chair of BLAG) will use an assessment criteria based on the requirements of the Better Start initiative to score EOI applications
  • Shortlisted organisations will be asked to attend an interview on Monday 18th February 2013 to enable the panel to make a final decision on the lead applicant forBirmingham’sEOI submission.
  • Shortlisted organisations will be informed of the outcome of the interviews on Tuesday 19thFebruary 2013.
  • We will be contacting potential partners once the Lead organisation has been selected.
