2. Healthy pantry feedback and next steps / Discussion of HFFA updated document:
Monthly meetings: would be a monthly food pantry meeting for sharing information, ideas, feedback and training
Is there guidance available for implementation of healthy pantry action items, such as a toolkit? We discussed not reinventing the wheel and drawing upon resources already available nationally.
Technical assistance and resources for gardening: potentially include those within the pantry tool kit
Where will the standards come from to refine for Fuel Good – it seems Foods to Encourage is a bit detailed and perhaps a little too complex; “Go Slow Whoa” may be more user-friendly. Will seek pantry input through a focus group/ meeting with pantries about this and other healthy pantry items.
Discussed making GSW marketing materials that depict shelf stable foods (for the pantries), that can be integrated with FuelGood as well as donation requests and reclaiming foods. These guidelines can be also used for pantries when purchasing.
GSW allows for less label reading and easier implementation.
BPHC + BUMC with Red Yellow Green drink standards could also be integrated to account for sugary drinks
Surveying/focus food pantries to see which of the options they prefer
Harvesters has received good feedback about basic changes (signs, etc.) from local pantries in which changes were made
My plate/ healthy foods coloring sheets/ activity sheets for kids for waiting room engagement that can also have a positive impact on the kiddos
Define who is “this” is coming from, it currently seems disjointed about who the toolkit is coming from a concerted place
Frame it as an offering of resources instead of a compliance agency
Overall brand will be LiveWell with partner logos
Create a “pitch” for pantries with clear overall goal/ benefits and reason for involvement
What incentives, benefits can we provide? Food pantries need marketing materials, donations, money for shelves, coolers, cooling units / Kait: Marketing Materials: display real food items on the posters, double-check if current grant funding could be used for marketing and design for the marketing materials. Otherwise, can use available materials and add what is not created.
Kait will send Boston Public Health Commission “Go Slow Whoa” drinks standards
Christina/Jessica: Add to the survey or get feedback via focus group to send out to pantries about which of the two options would be (F2E, GSW) the most helpful to the pantries. Jessica and Connie (and Liz, we hope) will help pull together group meeting to get some feedback and buy-in. Kelsey Fortin also said she would be happy to help.
Christina will add coloring pages, kids activities to options for implementation
Gwen: willing to work on a draft of goal/ benefits to pantries and those served
Christina will ask DCCF about potential grant $$ to buy healthy food for pantries as an incentive for participation

Enhance access to healthy food for low-income families / 1. Establish waste minimizing practices and policies with supermarkets, restaurants, cafeterias, schools, hospitals and any other large feeding institutions, restaurants and stores by supplying excess to food banks serving Douglas County (for low-income families)
2. Promote and advocate for changes in local food bank and pantry policies and practices that improve the nutrition and health status of communities, including:
2.1. Implementing choice-based systems
2.2. Providing incentives for selecting healthy whole local foods
2.3. Providing evidence-based case management
2.4. Promoting SNAP enrollment
2.5. Increasing capacity for storing and distributing healthy whole foods
2.6. Establishing new locations
2.7. Improving transit access to existing locations
3. Establish a system that engages low-income families as food growers
4. Establish a system that engages low-income families as small food business operators
5. Establish new opportunities to purchase fresh produce in North Lawrence and other parts of Douglas County with limited options, including farmer’s markets, integration into existing retail options, or opening corner stores
6. Promote and advocate for increased enrollment in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) through efforts including dollar for dollar matching programs, community-wide campaigns that destigmatize food assistance and improve understanding of the benefits of SNAP participation / a. By 2018, increase by 10% the availability of fruits and vegetables in food deserts through retail, gardens, and food banks.
b. By 2018, increase by 5% participation in SNAP/ food stamps. / i. Number of opportunities to purchase or obtain fruits and vegetables (Environmental Observation)
