Volunteer Role Outline
IT Training Volunteer
We wish to assure you of our appreciation of your volunteering with us and will do our best to make your volunteer experience enjoyable and rewarding.
The IT volunteer role involves providing one-to-one IT coaching and support to older people who are inexperienced in information technology. This is to introduce them to computer basics, the world-wide web and email, using a variety of suitable venues.
The role also involves giving older people, who may have never used a computer before, the opportunity to learn something new. It will also help to raise awareness of the internet and how to access information.
Summary of Task
Your role requires you to:
· Assist older people to learn the basics of computing, as well as specific applications such as shopping online, emailing friends and family and researching health topics;
· Complete a report for each learning session to ensure that learning objectives are met;
· Be committed to the value of older people in society
· Be willing to undertake induction training, work to guidelines and policies on teaching IT, Health and Safety, Confidentiality, Equal Opportunities, etc
The skills required for this role are:
· Computer literacy to the level of transferring basic knowledge to older people.
· Confidence, enthusiasm and ability to deal sympathetically, patiently and sensitively with all users.
· Good communication skills
· Reliability
· Understanding of the need for confidentiality
· Sense of Humour
· An understanding of/or adhering to the relevant Age UK South Lakeland policies and procedures, such as Confidentiality, Health & Safety and Equal Opportunities.
Location
17 Finkle Street, Kendal. Other locations will be by prior arrangement with the Volunteer Support Officer of Age UK South Lakeland and by mutual agreement
Support
Support will be provided by the Volunteer Support Officer, based in the Finkle Street offices.
Training Needed and Provided
Age UK South Lakeland Training Day to include:
General volunteer induction – Age UK South Lakeland policies, procedures and opportunities for volunteers
The role of the IT Training Volunteer - task description and activities, supervision and support.
CRB registration
Recognition & Support
All public transport expenses will be reimbursed
If own car is used mileage will be reimbursed at 40p per mile
Any necessary parking expenses will be reimbursed
Opportunities to access relevant training
Opportunities to meet with other Age UK South Lakeland volunteers
Person Specification
