SUGGESTED CHECKLIST FOR CLOSING YOUR UNIT (SEASONAL AND/OR VACATION)
This checklist should also be provided to tenants and guests who will be utilizing your unit during your absence. The checklist is provided as a suggestion and is for the safety of your unit and the condominium complex.
Turn off your water supply – best to turn off at the meter as well as the spigot servicing your unit.
Unplug or turn off the circuit breaker for the hot water tank. (remember this still holds gallons of water that has the potential to leak if the water heater is older – you might want to arrange to have it drained if you will be away for an extended period).
Shut off valves to the washing machine.
Do not leave perishables in the refrigerator and/or freezer. Empty the icemaker and turn off. If available for your refrigerator, set it at “energy-saver”. If you leave it off and empty be sure to prop open the door.
Unplug all other major appliances.
Empty all garbage and trash receptacles.
Pour a small amount of vegetable oil into garbage disposal.
Close all kitchen and bathroom sink drains.
Cover toilet openings and shower floor drains with plastic wrap.
Empty cupboards of any open bags or any types of pasta, rice and cereals.
Set the A/C unit thermostat to 78 degrees and humidistat between 65 to 70 degrees.
Change batteries in thermostats as well as smoke detectors.
Remove all plants, chairs and decorations from balconies and privacy walls.
Notify newspaper delivery service to discontinue service.
Complete mail forwarding information forms for the post office.
Page 2 – Suggested Checklist for Closing Your Unit
Turn off lights and fans – you might consider leaving a light or two on timers.
Lock all windows and doors. Close drapes, blinds, etc.
If you have changed your door lock you must make sure the office has a key for your unit.
If you have an alarm system, call your security monitoring service to let them know where you can be reached in case of a problem.
Leave a list of your vendors (plumber, electrician, etc.) with your caretaker. Caretaker information should be registered on your Resident Information sheet with the office.
Notify your Building Captain of your departure and potential return date. If leaving a vehicle be sure to provide a key to the vehicle with a neighbor or friend and notify the Association who has the key.
NOTE: Hurricane Shutters: Pursuant to the Rules and Regulations, page 11 - Item 8…Board approved hurricane shutters may be left closed when unit owners leave for the summer.
Hurricane season is from June 1st through November 30th. Shutters should be opened as soon as possible after the end of the hurricane season.
