4. Identify the BNL program that will benefit from the loan of this equipment: Thermal, Photo- and Radiation-Induced Processes in Condensed Media

Describe in detail the benefits of BNL that would result from this loan. Be specific in identifying the tangible benefit and the form of that benefit. (Attach additional sheet if needed).

Dr. Bruce Brunschwig, who is funded by the Thermal, Photo- and Radiation-Induced Processes in Condensed Media (TPRIPCM) program will be on leave at the Beckman Institute of the California Institute of Technology from February 1 2003 to February 1, 2004. By the loan of this equipment he will be able to continue research in Stark spectroscopy that is support by the TPRIPCM program. The Stark spectroscopy equipment is used only by Dr. Brunschwig and his research associates, thus during his absence if it remains at BNL and the technique will not be available. However, if the equipment is on loan to the Beckman Institute, personnel in the TPRIPCM program will be able to obtain Stark spectra by sending the compounds to Dr. Brunschwig.

Dr. Brunschwig’s research on Stark spectroscopy includes work on both molecular systems and nanoscale systems. During his stay at Caltech he anticipates that he will develop a number of new collaborations that will require the use of Stark spectroscopy. Also Dr. Brunschwig has a number of collaborations that are an essential part of the TPRIPCM program. These collaborations can only continue if he has access to a Stark spectrometer. By the loan of this equipment, students and postdocs at Caltech will become familiar with BNL research and make it more likely that they will apply to BNL for positions when they leave Caltech. A fu

5. How long will this equipment be on loan?

One year.

6.Is this equipment being loaned excess to your needs.

a. ______YesCan this equipment be transferred to another BNL organization or permanently transferred to the borrowing agency? If no, provide detailed justification for retention.

b. ______X___ NOIdentify the BNL program this equipment supports and describe why the equipment can be out of active service.

Thermal, Photo- and Radiation-Induced Processes in Condensed Media

The equipment has been constructed and is used only by Dr. Brunschwig and research associates under his direction. During his leave the equipment would not be used. By the loan of this equipment the Stark spectrometer will be used in research directly related to the work supported by the TPRIPCM FWP. Further the instrument will be improved and serviced during the loan period.

7. Could patentable invention result form this loan?

a. _____ Yes. Forward to Patent Office for review.

b. ___X___ No.

8. List BNL number(s) and description and condition of equipment being loaned. Attach list if necessary.

(see attached list)

9. Provide any additional information you feel is pertinent to support the approval of this loan request.

This loan will support the ongoing research of Dr. Brunschwig and the TPRIPCM group and lead to new collaborations between Caltech researchers and TPRIPCM group members.
