Chapter 5 Short Essay’s
1). Compare and contrast sex offenders and sexual predators?
Sex offenders and sexual predators differ in their approach toward sexual misconduct. Sex offenders choose to commit one sex crime which majority of the time would be a family member and tend to be non-progressive when choosing to commit the act (pg. 147). This could be an uncle wanting to have sexual relations with their nice or nephew and will go about it in an emotional manner so that the person is accepting of it somewhat. Sexual predators on the other hand commit multiple sex crimes as they prey on prospect as well as return to those who they have assaulted sexually before (pg. 147). A good example of this being exercised is a woman or male being constantly staked by an individual until they have the perfect moment to impose their sexual lust upon them. The things that the two share in common is wanting to commit sexual acts with someone against their will, preying on their victims for a period of time and more than likely offend again.
2). Discuss the “restoration stage” in the process of serial killing?
The restoration stage is a period in time the serial killer can feel good after killing so much that they can take a break from it for a few years (pg. 195). Most serial killers will get carried away and will kill until they get caught or killed, however, some will go without getting caught and reach a point in time in which they have depleted the urge to kill from their system for the time being and may never kill again or just for a period of time until that lust comes back.
3). Discuss “Uncensored Exotics” and how the restoration stage is revealed?
Uncensored exotics are referred to the actual thoughts and fantasies of the killer and how they wish to impose their will on towards their victims. It shows how the process is start and when it will finish which will be pertaining towards the restoration stage when they have reached that climatic moment in which they don’t feel the need to kill anymore.
4). Explore what is at the core of fantasy?
The control factor becomes the highlight of the attack (pg. 194). When a sexual offender chooses their prey they go in for the attack and this will involve sexual torture used as a tool to humiliate and degrade the victim. Once the offender has come to the climax they are complete with their fantasy and will kill the victim shortly afterwards.
5). How is deviant sexual acts part of the killing process but not the actual reasons for killing?
Deviant sexual acts are just used so that the offender gets their fantasies fulfilled by having their victim’s life in their control during the act. They will sometimes brutally rape and torture their victim until they gain that release. The killing only comes in once they have completed the fantasy with that victim; they have nothing to do with them.

1).What types of drugs are used to commit healthcare murder, and do they differ with the sites?
Drugs such as digoxin, pavulon and potassium chloride are some of the drugs used to commit murders in the healthcare environment (pg. 210). These drugs will vary form location depending on the resources and the accessibility to get the drugs. In the United States, insulin, epinephrine, and potassium chloride are used the most however, in counties such as Europe morphine is used.
2).How do professionals go from normal, civil life to the torture and destruction of human beings? Discuss the cases of doctors who kill and how they might justify the violation of the ethical directive, “Do no harm.”
They is always ulterior motives which could be There are some healthcare providers who are diagnosed with Munchausen syndrome however, majority of the one who decide to kill their patients enjoy the power over life and death, while a few financially profited from it (pg. 204).
3).What does the author mean by “place-specific” murders?
Place-specific murders are that have no dumpsites for the bodies and take place in a stay-at-home or at-work environment (pg. 209). This could involve a nurse working at an in home site and decides to drug and kill the victim in their own home to make it look as if it was of natural causes or something which could also happen at the work site such as a clinic or a hospital with readily available drugs.
4).Explore the accessibility of hospitals and nursing homes to explain the increase in serial murders.
Murders occur in hospitals and nursing homes because of the accessibility and vulnerability to is patients (pg. 210). It gives personnel the freedom to come and go as they please and commit acts against their patients while sleeping, in a comatose status, or just seriously ill enough to where they can’t fight back. Another reason is because most law enforcement official will not think that murder or crimes of this matter will occur in an environment posed to help people vice hurt or kill them.
5).Compare and contrast male versus female healthcare killers.
Males tend to place their victims in a status to just sexual assault them and sometime torture them by other means. Female offenders on the other hand tend to use muscle relaxing drugs such as succinylcholine in excessive doses to stop the chest muscles from functions which will cause the patient to stop breathing (pg. 213). They will also find patient who are less powerful than them who are more than likely too young, seriously ill, or of the elderly population. The two sexes share the sexual misconduct, accessibility and detection from staff and authorities.
