In Louisiana, 659 persons were killed and there were over 70,000 injuries from motor vehicle crashes in 2011. The Louisiana Passenger Safety Task Force has created a statewide partnership to minimize serious and fatal injuries from motor vehicle crashes through education, information, and standardized training, thus making unrestrained and improperly restrained motor vehicle occupants unacceptable in Louisiana. You can help us to achieve our mission by participating in a training to address passenger safety issues. Please help us increase the Louisiana seatbelt and child safety seat usage rate and prevent the tragic injuries and fatalities to families throughout the state.

Broken down by age, crashes are the No. 1 cause of death for every age from 3 through 33. Injuries from motor vehicle crashes result in the largest number of years of life lost before age 65 and cost more than any other childhood injury. Safety seat check up events in our state have proven that 9 out of 10 Louisiana families are using their child’s safety seat incorrectly—either using the wrong type of seat, installing the child safety seat incorrectly in their vehicle or had problems securing their child in the child safety seat. Correctly installed and used child safety seats reduce the risk of death by 71% for infants, by 54% for toddlers, and reduce the need for hospitalization by 69% for children ages 4 and under. This is not an insoluble problem. By increasing awareness, we can save a countless number of lives.

This is your opportunity to make a difference. We are pleased tooffer a four hourPassenger Safety Awareness Training Course in your area. This workshop is designed to meet the needs of law enforcement, safety professionals, health professionals and advocates. The focus of this course will be child passenger safety, but the scope will include passenger safety for all occupants. Participation will help to ensure that you and the community are transporting children as safely as possible and provide the knowledge needed to enforce adult and child passenger safety laws. Participants willtake part in interactive lectures and hands-on exercises to help increase their awareness of child passenger safety issues.

State and local sponsorship allow us to offer this valuable course at no cost to the participant/agency.Attached is a tentative agenda and application. Feel free to call if I can provide you with any additional information. We look forward to working with you to reduce the risk of fatal and serious injuries as a result of motor vehicle crashes.
