Committee Issues New Report
Prudence and Economy: Rethinking State Limits on County Offices
The Senate Local Government Committee has released the summary of its March 17, 2010 oversight hearing that explored the state laws governing county office consolidations.
County officials, legislators, and others discussed significant issues related to office consolidations, including the incompatible offices doctrine, potential cost savings and service improvements, office holder qualifications, and voters’ role in consolidating county offices. Speakers’ prepared comments and responses to legislators’ questions revealed widely divergent opinions on many of the issues discussed.
The report includes summaries of what the speakers told the legislators, which the Committee’s staff later distilled into four findings. The Committee’s new report also reprints the staff’s 15-page briefing paper, plus all of the written materials that the legislators received from the speakers and others.
