Math 120: Pre-Calculus Mathematics

Textbook:Algebra and Trigonometry, with Analytic Geometry, by Swokowski and
Cole
Course description: We will include instruction in the following areas:
the geometric definitions of the trigonometric
functions and their extensions to real numbers
as well as trigonometric equations and identities.
We will also discuss complex numbers and conic
sections. This material is found in Chapters 6-8
and 11 of the text.
Odds & Ends: You may use calculators in this course, however I reserve the right to
restrict their use on quizzes and exams.
Grading: The semester grade in Math 120 is based on the student’s performance
As follows:
Homework: 15% of the total grade. The homework is to be on full-sized paper,
clearly written with plenty of room. Give your full name, the page
and the number of the problem being worked, and show enough work.
Homework will be collected (but only on the day it is due), reviewed
and returned.
For late assignments will be accepted at one-half of the credit.
Tests: 50% of the total grade. There will be two midterms.
Final: 35% of total grade. There will be a comprehensive final.
Grades: >90% gets A>80% gets B
>70% gets C<70% gets no credit.
Note: This syllabus is tentative and subject to change.
Important Notes:
- If you wish to drop the course it is your responsibility to formally
withdraw from class via TRACS prior to the drop date.
- In accordance with university rules, student may be required to show
a picture id. at any time during the quarter.
3. If you have a phone or pager, please turn it off in class. If there is
an emergency, please see the instructor.
- No food is allowed in the classroom. You may have a drink in the
classroom if it has a sealed lid on it.
- Students are expected to conduct themselves at all times in an appropriate manner. Using or giving improper assistance during
An exam will not be tolerated.
- Plagiarism and cheating are violations of the Student Discipline
Code and may be dealt with by both the instructor and the Judicial

- Do your homework regularly! Learning mathematics must be
an active study – something like a sport – if you don’t practice,
you won’t get better.
