Role Context and Purpose
Misión México is a family group home model established in 2001 by Pam and Alan Skuse. Our vision is that, through a loving, caring, family environment where we focus on education, the children in our care will have the opportunities to grow and reach their full potential.
The focus of the Youth Transition Program is to empower our young people in a bid to break the cycle of poverty and abuse, and further create confident, competent young adults and positive role models who can successfully live independently.The Youth Transition Programme was established in 2014 to enable older youth within Misión México to begin their transition to semi-independent living, and build the skills required to live independently. Misión México has procured two off-site homes for the YTP to be supported to finish higher education or pursue other career goals. The young adults are still considered a vital part of the Misión México family and have a key role in nurturing the younger children and supporting volunteers within the refuge.
The Youth Transition Program Coordinator – Girlsprovides support to these young people 13 years of age and older who are requiring intensive support to develop independent living and life skills. This is a live-in role and requires you to live with these young people onsite.
Primary Objective of the Role
Creating a safe, secure and stable environment for the young people, with a supportive learning environment that ensures their daily living skills are developed.
The focus of the training includes:
·Independent and practical living skills
·Health and nutrition
·Positive role modelling skills
·Education and employment
·Financial planning and budgeting
·Practical support sourcing employment
Personal development is also a critical element of the program to help improve their confidence, interpersonal and negotiation skills, and self-motivation. It is an ongoing and dynamic process based on the level of maturity and skill development of the individual young person. It is supported by flexible plans, monitoring of progress and regular review to update the plan in response to changing needs and circumstances.
On engagement of role there will be a 6-week probationary period at which time the Directors, General Manager and successful applicant will review position and future of the role.
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • Extensive knowledge and demonstrated skills and experience in the provision of support and service delivery to young people who have experienced significant neglect or abuse issues, challenging behaviors, loss of family and personal connection, lack of schooling and drug and alcohol issues.

Qualifications, Experience and other requirements
  • A relevant Tertiary qualificationor minimum 2years’ experience in the fields of Social Services, Human Service, or Education (paid or voluntary roles)
  • Valid ‘Working with Children Check’ and undergo a Criminal Records Check prior to employment. Subsequently, staff must report any criminal charges or court appearances.
  • Experience working with young people from disadvantaged and/or abusive backgrounds
  • Experience working in a community/residential background (preferable)
  • Minimum basic knowledge ofSpanish language (preferable)
  • Moderate to advanced knowledge of English
  • Minimum 6 months’ commitment(12 months preferable)

Key Responsibilities
Direct Service Delivery and Pastoral Care
  • Oversee the day-to-day running of the household and demonstrate good housekeeping skills.
  • Consistently be a positive role model to the young people living within the household.
  • Attend to the needs of ‘household’ by providing ongoing support and direction to ensure stability and harmony.
  • Schedule regular house meetings.
  • Encourage the young person to develop their language and communication skills.
  • Help the young people with any physical social presentation needs such as clothing and self-care needs.
  • Assist young people to learn how to process information, including problem solving, goal setting and planning, and picking up on social cues.
  • Develop opportunities for the young person to experience a wide range of activities, people and circumstances in an enjoyable, non-threatening manner so they may learn to relate positively in social situations.
  • Develop strategies to help the young person identify and manage their emotions and behaviour.
  • Respond appropriately and effectively to day-to-day living situations including challenging, trauma-related behaviours.
  • Assist the young person to develop empathy, consideration for others and accountability for actions.
  • Explore ways that the young person can help others and contribute to the community, for example volunteer work, peer mentoring.
  • Assist and encourage young people to develop domestic skills, routines and practice their independent living skills.
  • Assist the young person to manage social outings independently and learn to solve problems and plan ahead: thinking and planning ahead for safe social outings e.g. safe consumption of alcohol, localities, knowing how to identify risk laden situations, how to remove oneself.
  • Ensure young person is exposed to appropriate role models and behaviours, e.g. observing adults resolve issues appropriately; treat each other with mutual respect; using manners and using integrity.
  • Coordinate appropriate activities for the young people aged 13+ living in the main Misión México household e.g. cooking, shopping and developing self-confidence.
Administration and Project Management
  • Develop appropriate individual action plans in conjunction with the young people
  • Provide risk assessments for individuals and the household
  • Complete assessments and introductions of new clients into the program
  • Conduct monthly household meetings
  • Provide a monthly progress report to the YTP Coordinator & Misión México Directors
  • Provide quarterly updates to Program funders
  • Assist with program funding applications
  • Manage all aspects of the Youth Transition Programme budget and expenses with the Misión México Finance Administrator
Other
  • Participate in staff meetings, program reviews, program and policy development and associated activities.
  • Other duties as required
