SENIOR FAMILY LIAISON OFFICER – Job Description

1. Purpose of job

To co-ordinate and manage the day to day work of the pastoral team. To oversee the emotional and well being of the whole school and to provide support to children, families and all staff as their first port of call.

To work alongside the designated Child Protection Officer and to be fully aware of C.P. issues.

To be the channel of communication between S.M.T. / Teaching Staff / Support Staff and the Pastoral Team

3. Principal Accountabilities

Provide regular briefing sessions with FLO and the Inclusion Team to discuss individual children and families.

Provide supervision to the team.

Provide a FLO service to families going through trauma.

Co-ordinate appropriate intervention to children and families.

Provide an immediate response / service to children, families / carers before or waiting referral.

Be responsible for the communication of child / family issues to be passed to appropriate staff.

Ensure all notes from the pastoral team, reports and documents are up to date.

Keep clear notes from all family contact using the FLO database

To liaise with SLT, SEN staff, Unit and Nursery staff responsible for meeting the emotional needs of the children as needed.

To provide a Counselling or Pastoral care service to all school staff.

To be part of the school team responsible for the ‘Whole School’s Health’ including Healthy Schools and Extended Services.

To attend regular feedback / supervision / discussion with SMT.

To work with the designated Child Protection Officer and to be trained and qualified to the same standard.

To liaise with staff of the Children’s Centre to provide cohesive family support

4. Necessary experience

Qualifications.

Good basic education with competency in English and Maths.

Willingness to undertake foundation course in basic counselling skills.

Willingness to undertake further training.

Recognised counselling qualification (preferred).

Driving licence.

Experience and attainments.

Previous experience of working with children and families in the public, private or voluntary sector. Knowledge of the workings of a Family Liaison Officer would be a distinct advantage.

Skills and abilities.

Excellent communication, listening and observational skills.

Ability to handle confidential information and material.

Organisational abilities and accurate record keeping skills.

Ability to facilitate parenting skills.

Good interpersonal skills.

Ability to facilitate groups and multi-agency meetings.

Previous experience with inter-agency working – Health / Social Services etc.

Willingness to attend evening meetings.

Ability to produce a package of support from the information available for the pastoral team to implement.

Knowledge.

Sound knowledge and understanding of child growth and development.

Knowledge of the parenting needs of children.

Good knowledge of Child Protection issues . trained to same level as C.P. designated officer.

Knowledge of special educational needs.

Knowledge of school entry and transfer to secondary school procedures.

5. Scope for Impact

To facilitate the work of the pastoral team / teaching staff / support staff to provide an holistic approach and healthy outcomes in all aspects of school life both for children, families and staff.

6. Job Context

Needs led – initially with other FLO but also with C.Ts T.As and all other support staff.

The post holder must have good communications skills to be able to inform, persuade, inspire and motivate pupils and provide feedback to other professionals as required.

The post holder should have excellent interpersonal and communicational skills in order to deal effectively with delicate and confidential issues that they will meet in the course of their duties and with the wide range of personnel with whom they will have dealings.

The post holder must work within relevant policies, codes of practice and legislation reporting any concerns to relevant persons
