BOARD OF EDUCATION - WYNDMERE PUBLIC SCHOOL

Monday, March 9, 2015 - 7:00 P.M.

Buskohl called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm.

Members present: Buskohl, Busche,Foertsch, Johnson, and Manstrom.

Members absent: none.

Others in attendance: Chris Swenson, David Hanson, Janice Illies, and Shari Hetland. Also in attendance were: Edmund Goerger, Samantha Goerger, Jennifer Manstrom

Motion by Buscheto approve the February 9, 2015 minutes. Seconded by Manstrom. All members voted yes.

Swenson asked to add 7a) Public Comments to the agenda. Motion by Manstromto approve the agenda with the aforementioned change. Seconded by Johnson. All members voted yes.

Swenson reviewed the financial report. He provided follow-up to Manstrom’s question last month about the Maintenance Building Improvement line item. Expenses included in that line item are trees, air conditioning for the Resource Room, fence by the FB field, boiler repairs and some roof repairs. Motion by Buscheto approve the financial report. Seconded by Johnson. All members voted yes.

Motion by Manstromto pay the March bills in the amount of $30,810.16and the November payroll in the amount of $228,535.44. Seconded by Busche. All members voted yes.

Public Comments: Goerger thanked the board for adding Public Comments to the agenda.

Correspondence: Goerger submitted a letter concerning the Public Comments section of the Board Agenda. Swenson explained that the agenda that was sent out this month didn’t have Public Comments on it. It was an oversight as it is typically on the agenda.

Manstrom presented the Vocational Center report: Steiner provided a tracking chart for the house project that shows the progression of the house. The project should be done approximately the 3rd week of April. There are eight students interested in a summer construction project. The National Technical Honor Society Banquet will be held in Wyndmere on April 22. There are five strong applicants for the Counselor position. Swenson stated a candidate has accepted the position.

Building Committee report: Reviewed Ottertail heating report. Swenson stated that plumbing and electrical people have looked at the south bathroom to provide estimates. He also provided a possible layout for an expanded concession stand. S&B Homes is putting together a cost estimate. The 5th graders wrote letters of persuasion to Mr. Hanson regarding improvements. Two of their suggestions that are being considered are replacing the sand in the sandbox and installing volleyball poles for the playground.

Transportation Committee report: Fuel usage report was not available at this time. Swenson has looked into purchasing a suburban to have available for administrators and teachers to use for school related travel. Discussion.

Co-op Committee report: The Co-Op Committee met in January to review the By-laws. Swenson asked that the Board review the By-laws for approval at the April Board meeting.

Education Foundation report: Not available at this time. It is estimated there will be $38,000 income this year from the Education Foundation funds. The Scholarship Essay Contest will be set up for later this month for the seniors.

Hanson presented the Elementary Principal/Technology report: Kindergarten registration will be Thursday, April 9th from 6:30-8:00 PM. At this time, there are 23 children that will be registering for kindergarten next fall. The state on-line assessments will begin next week.

High school principal’s/A.D. report: Congratulations to Paul Moffet, March Student of the Month and Mrs. Strege, March Mentor of the Month. Congratulations to the new NHS members: Nick Foertsch, Mikayla Mellem, Austin Rhody, Tori Arnold, Anna Mauch, Abbi Metzger and Megan Strege. Samantha Goerger, Emily Lothspeich, Brian Schmit, Vincent Chicaderis, Jordyn Hetland and Gabe Lothspeich will be competing next week at the Academic Olympic Competition in Lidgerwood next week. Congratulations to Samantha Goerger who was named to the Academic All-State Class B Gold Team and was one of the finalists for the National Elks Scholars Program. Emily Lothspeich was named 1 of 2 Distinguished Finalists in North Dakota for the Pruduential Spirit of Community Award. The SOS team met their goal of raising $3,500 for cancer awareness. STEM day was a success. The top five teams presented to a NASA representative who chose the overall winner. Congratulations to Jordyn Hetland, Mckenzie Rhody, Colson Barton, Gabe Chavez, Charlie Moffet, Allie Mauch, Brayden Heitkamp, Laura Gutzmer and Kadie Hoots. The 3rd Quarter ends on March 11. The juniors will be taking the ACT test on March 17th. Congratulations to the BBB team as they placed 2nd at Districts, to Coach Hosford, District 1 Coach of the Year and to Seth Harles, Kellen Jorgenson, Brian Schmit and Adolfo Vasques on making the All-District team. Seth and Brian were also named to the All-Wild Rice Conference Team. Congratulations to the GBB team on placing 4th at Districts. Congratulations to Allie Mauch on being named to the All-District team and the All-Wild Rice Conference team. Brian Schmit was nominated by Wyndmere for the Wild Rice Conference Glenn Dorr Scholarship. Congratulations to Gabe Lothspeich on state speech qualifying. Great job to Seth Harles and Brian Schmit as they were selected to play in the 9-man Shrine Football game in July. The Winter Sports Banquet will be held on March 23 in Lidgerwood. The Wild Rice Conference Banquet is March 24th in Richland.

Reviewed the investment sheet.

Swenson asked the Board to review policy ACBB – Significant Contagious Diseases Policy and Regulations, ACBB-BR – Responding to Potential Health Threats and ACBB-E2 – Laws on Immunizations, Contagious Diseases…for the next board meeting.

Wellness Committee designee: Swenson stated the school’s Wellness Policy needs to be reviewed. He asked if a board member is interested in serving on the committee. Johnson stated she would be willing to.

Approve Supt. Evaluation: Johnson and Buskohl met with Swenson to review the Superintendent Evaluation. Swenson received all satisfactory ratings and no comments. Motion by Foertsch to approve the Superintendent’s Evaluation. Seconded by Busche. Roll Call vote; all members voted yes.

Approve Facility Use Agreement: Motion by Manstrom to approve the Facility Use Agreement. Seconded by Johnson. Roll call vote; all members voted yes.

Filing Date for School Board Elections is April 6th, 2015 at 4:00 PM. There are two seats up for election. They are Danton/Liberty Grove/Dexter/Wyndmere /portion of Sargent County Townships and City of Wyndmere, currently held by John Manstrom and Rick Foertsch, respectively.

Set Driver’s Education Course Tuition ($125 in 2014): Swenson stated that last year Wyndmere co-oped with Richland for Driver’s Traiining. Richland is willing to do that again this year. Tuition needs to be set for the class. Motion by Busche to set the 2015 Driver’s Education Course Tuition at $125 per student. Seconded by Foertsch. Roll Call vote; all members voted yes.

Business Educaiton/Tech Coordinator Position Discussion: This item was discussed at last month’s meeting. Currently Wyndmere has a ½ time Business Teacher and a ½ time Tech Coordinator. Swenson presented several options for the board. Discussion. The board recommendation was to advertise for a full-time Tech Coordinator, with a preference for someone with a Business Education degree.
